Yes, in 1973, then I got married. Cars were then turned into housing and furniture. Convertible with 4 speed manual, rare. Car is still around, has been "restored" 3 or 4 times, but the current owner has it fixed up pretty good. Fuel is a major problem for him. I used to run it on 115 Avgas, or BP-W 100 Octane with 1 of benzol to 4 of W. Sale of Avgas is now highly restricted so he was thinking of lowering compression ratio to run on premium unleaded with added benzol/toluol/methyl benzine or whatever they call it. It was 11.5 to 1 compression ratio when I owned it. A factory drag race spec. engine with the two Carter four barrels changed for a smoothed, flowed, and professionally modified (imported ready to fit) Quadrajet. This mod made it almost tractable around town in the dry. In the wet it was almost impossible to drive. I have posted some details on this site previously. I wish I had made recordings of the sound. A Hemi 426 pulling 7000 rpm in the indirects through twin three inch pipes each side. Search for either dream cars or attainable cars.

I am now a blubbering mess, drooling uncontollably on my laptop...Well, not quite, but I wish just one day to drive one of these...The places I've worked over the years have supplied some great driving experiences, Rolls Silver Shadow, '71 Camaro 400Ci, Jag XJC 400Chev, Jensen Interceptor 383, E55 Charger(fake, with a grunty 360) 300KW Chev Defender 110, 4.6 Blown Rangie Classic, 3.9 Blown DiscoS1, Merc 560 SEL, Lotus Elite, a series of ex cop car 'dunnydoors'(What pieces of rubbish THEY were) and a few common cars like Lexus LS400's ( my currrent ride) and Honda Legends etc.

Yes, the sound of a big Hemi at 7K would be spine tingling, and now I can't sleep...Thanks a LOT.

I had to knock back an offer of a 1970 Plymouth Superbird in 1983. SWMBO went absolutely off her head when the subject was broached. I was at a sales convention in Minnieapolis (January, bloody freezing is not an apt description of the weather) and both the president of the host company and his export sales manager were car nuts. Pres. had a 1940 Ford coupe with modernised running gear, a 270 OFFY on gasoline with 58mm Webers, and Muncie trans, Halibrand rear end, awesome little car. Export mgr. had a collection of Pontiac GTO's, eight or so. They knew someone in Fairmont, Minnesota, who had a Hemi Superbird which was available. We drove over and had a look, a complete original car, little use, garaged. Probably not used because they really were a thinly disguised race car, not suitable for the road. He said every time he took it out the State Police would end up following him. He wanted US$8000 for it. I calculated I could get it home, converted to RH and registered for A$13000-A$15000. The exchange rate then was real friendly our way. I still almost cry when thinking about it.

I'm interested in buying a detroit locker for the back of my d1 24 spline. In the US the're $675 usd and $620 usd for the truetrac lsd. I contacted the main supplier here in aus (large 4wd accessory chain) and they want $1300 aud. This seems fairly high even with dollar conversion and shipping. Is there anywhere cheaper to buy? I saw on another forum just recently that somebody bought them for about $900 locally but can't remember what forum. Also, do you think they will be ok with standard axles? Don't do a lot of hardcore stuff but am towing a trailer up Telegraph Track next June and don't want to be embarrassed by the 2 gu patrols I travel with.

I recently picked up a Tru-Trak on ebay for $750:D They retail for just over a $1,000, but some people have managed to get them a little cheaper.

As for the axles, it is only a matter of time before the original rear ones need replacing, I would be biting the bullet and doing them sooner rather than later. Do you have any play/wear with your current axles?

Without a locker or LSD, my rear axles have worn after pulling a trailer. Just done 130,000km, they don't need replacing right at this minute, but they are wearing.

At exchange rate of 0.72, US$675 is A$937, plus postage. Sea mail is the cheapest way from the U.S. Takes 8-13weeks. US Postal Service will accept parcels up to 100 pounds. Exchange rate is currently hovering around 0.76 but your friendly credit card will charge a foreign exchange commission which is usually about 3 cents on the rate. Do you know anyone in the U.S. who could negotiate a discount and pack and ship for you?

I don't know anyone in the states who could package and send for me but if some people can obtain them for approximately au$1000 then it seems like the price I have is a large markup. Do you know where I can get one for this price? Also, who would be the cheapest for aftermarket shafts?

not equal pressures but equal rolling diameters! and yes it makes a BIG differance in a full detroit but not so much in the true track.
ive just dont a round trip to fraser and there is NO adverse effects anywhere, no pulling on corners ect. only tight turns in car parks. (detroit NOT true track)

my original post on here had all the info on where to get them in oz for. dont go near 4x4 shops they will rip you off.

also i agree totally with cols110, a detroit in the rear and true track in the front! bloody marvellous!
