I don't think it would be a good idea to use any sealant on the head gasket. I haven't done a TD5, but I have never used it on any other engines I have put together.
OK. I finally have the Head back together. All I have to do now is fit it. After an oppinion on using a sealant on the gasket or not. There is no mention of sealant in the manual but I do have some ThreeBond liquid Gasket. This stuff needs to be fitted at 1 minute after applying so is a rather annoying but effective sealant.

Its almost there.
I have known people to use Hylomar spray on head gaskets, maybe that is the gear.Originally Posted by George130

For copper head gaskets there is a very good spray made by VHT that you spray on the gasket before fitting. I have used this before and recommend it.
For more modern gaskets, hylomar and loctite make sealants/sprays. But I have never used them and don't know if they are needed.
I would use Hylomar its good stuff and used by performance engine builders when fitting heads.

The stuff I'm getting is the VHT copper spray.
Yay a parcel arrived today.
I now have the little black box!
Just have to wire it in now. Thanks Dan!
Doesn't the TD5 have a composite gasket??? I have never heard of using VHT copper spray on anything other than a copper gasket...Originally Posted by George130
Yea it is a composite. They told me I don't need to use anything but they always do and I realy don't want to do all this work again. 2 months off the road and thousands spent is more than I could afford right now.
Just confirming ED, yes I always use either Worth engine seal or Hylomar on all Td5's. The fact that the gasket is a composite steel shim type, requires some sealant on the block side, due to marks left around water ports which are close to the fire rings. These marks are due to the head gasket 'biting' in to the cast iron with its sealing rings.
It is excessive if the plastic head dowels fail in the early Td5's, the head will actually move, and this causes the gasket failure in the first place.(!!!)
I hope it all goes well Ed, and wish you joy at your first drive in months!
I watched my Rangie on DVD during a club trip the other night, Bad mistake! Now I have to get IT going !
