You won't even notice it's not working until you try & bleed the system. It will possibly be an issue on steep climbs too.

Most of the ticker type pumps are "push" type pumps & don't like sucking fuel through. It would be best to fit one at the fuel tank end.
I'm not too sure of the current draw but I'd wire it from the ignition side (if you can call it that on a diesel) & run it through a relay/fuse.

I'm using a ticker mounted on my inner guard of my disco runs fine. If you want a quick fix for the fuel pump eg on the side of the road, buy a quick fit push in air fitting 8mm to 8mm that the size of the hose these are diesel rated even tho most people don't know would take 5 min to fit. look like these: http://www.legris.com/legris_com/Vis...02&fa=01&sf=02

uncouple the return line from the injectors that goes back to the tank... make sure the filler neck is sealed tight ( a peice of inner tube works wonders here) crack all the bleed nuts you can find. After changing the fuel filter today, I couldnt prime the fuel system. Checked and found the lift pump isnt working. It looks like its been failed for a while and been running ok on the the injection pump. Now that ive introduced some air the sytem cant prime with the injection pump alone

Some years ago I was driving a RRC 3.5 EFI from Perth to Melb. The car was on LPG, but started on ULP.

The LPG installers had cut and crimped the fuel pump wire at about 5 spots, so I couldn't get fuel to the motor due to bad earth / voltage issues. I only discovered this later.

The car could be tow started, but not started with aerostart.

I bought a VE Commodore EFI fuel pump from the auto shop in Port Augusta, and fitted it that night at camp in the Flinders Ranges.

The pump was about $80, and being for an EFI, it transferred fuel quite quickly. It easily sucked through the tank pump in the RRC. Once I got home and sorted the poor wiring, I left it in-situ and had a built in redundancy system, with the original tank lift pump and the external EFI lift pump working in tandem.

This is similar to ticker pump solution, except that it is guaranteed to supply more than enough fuel for any given circumstance. As such it is probably a worthwhile consideration for a long range tourer / overlander as a built in redundancy, and I expect it would work just as well with a Tdi as it did with the V8.
