    While coasting the drive went

A guy at work has a 5 sp 97 Defender TDI, we was doing a country highway travel when he noticed a rattle noise, then no drive. He said there was a burning smell in the cabin.
The clutch pedal presses down and releases ok, but he has no drive. He thinks the clutch must have burnt out.
    What else could it be.

I hope your brave enough to reply to Mikes suggestion..How many times has that happened to all of us...I usually leave mine in Neutral overnite
In the dark by the time a theif gets it started and works out the problem I will have enough time to beat the living life out of them , load them in the empty 44 drum and head off fishing for the day about 35km out at sea

I recall faffing around with the centre console on my D2 - removing all the bits - and to do so I had to put the High/low into neutral.

After putting all the bits back in I decided to go to the pub, popped the car into reverse - nothing - popped it into drive nothing.

Stripped the whole lot down again, had I missed anything - yes of course I had missed something - the high/low was in neutral - selected high - and off I went with a very red face

..................plus I was late for the pub

A favourite trick of mine when leaving the pub is to find an unlocked mates 4x4 and put the transfercase in N.
Given their state when leaving the pub they dont work the problem out, they shouldnt be driving anyway. The vehicle is normally still there next day

It can still pop out if not properly engaged at 100 kph.

And would it cause the burning rubber type smell? He was stuck and joined the RACV on the spot, they had to tow him.... if it was a transfer lever then surely he and the RACV bloke would have picked it?
Anyway he has it at a service centrte, so will find out early next week.

And a burning rubber type smell?

any oil coming from the bellhouging drain? how about smoke/vapours?

If it was an auto I could sling you a short list of clutches and internal brakes that could have done it but in a manual Id be thinking its only really the clutch plate getting a sudden bath of oil or suffering face shredding that would do it but then youd have oil or debry coming out of the bell housing drain...

assuming youve proved the tcase is in gear and the box is in gear the only thing left is the clutch

LR had a spate of poorly adjusted high/low linkages in the mid 1990s.
I can't tell you how many cars we had towed in from Mooney Mooney bridge that had popped out of high range while on the long coast down to the bridge.
No matter how many times we told the towies & LR roadside assist, they still towed them to our workshop for us to stick the lever back into high range before it even got off the truck .
