Hoping someone can point me in the right direction here - bought my first Disco a few weeks back, 107000km on it, 1 owner, full (well, almost) service history. Appears not to have been used much offroad.
I went and had a full (40k) service done at a 'rover specialist', before getting offroad in it.
Every time we have been on the sand now, the transmission oil temp warning light comes on. We start off in high-range on pretty easy track, tyres on 20psi, then as soon as we get into soft sand, it takes almost no time to generate the alert.
Thought it might be a faulty sensor, but it does not come on during normal driving, and when it does come on, stopping the engine for 5 or 10 minutes results in the alert disappearing. Pushing on through a bit of soft sand again, and the light re-appears.
Hopefully someone can tell me whether this is indicative of impending doom for my 4x4, as it is 'just' still in warranty from the dealer.

The TRANS HIGH TEMP LIGHT lights up for both the automatic trans oil temp AND the temp of the Transfer Case.....you need to know which one is "too hot"...[that's if you've got a auto box obviously]
First step would be to check oil levels in both !
BTW......Which engine? [size, type, diesel or petrol V8].....Which transmission?....[auto or manual]

That and drop the tyre pressures to a maximum of 16psi on soft sand. You may have to go even lower than that.

I had the same problem on sand and even more so after a significant round of power upgrades. I then had an extra ATF cooler installed and problems that developed from this sorted. Actually they were never sorted - and I highly recommend not to fit a cooler to the ZF because the line pressure runs at around 120psi.
In the end, when everything was pulled apart as the factory ATF cooler was now slightly leaking the root problem was found. The factory ATF cooler was plugged with mud. Replaced it and it the temps have never been a problem since, including towing 2.5T up passes like Mt Victoria west of Sydney. Check the cooler isn't blocked, as I thought my radiator cleaning regime was good enough.
On the Disco2 at least they sit between two other radiators and down low. They cant help but get blocked.

SupporterMy Disco did heaps of miles on 9 mile beach just south of Newcastle - it has really soft sand and dunes. Did it in all types of conditions and the transmission light only ever came on once and was on a 40s day when I was too lazy to let the tyres down and didn't have the CDL locked - it was the only time the engine temp also went up. I would suggest it is not the environmental conditions that it is causing the light to come on just something else - the obvious are low oil levels or a sensor issue.

Hi there, i would suggest that you get the auto serviced, but shop around it will cost between $100 - $300 depending who you go to. had my disco done last year cost $170 including parts.

This is quite seriouis if left unchecked, Do as Chunk suggests, get it serviced ASAP, by someone who knows 4HP22's etc. If getting hot and cooler is unobstructed and flowing OK, kickdown cable adjusted etc, I would be saving for a box rebuild possibly. Excessive slippage can cause quick heat buildup, and this is caused by clutch wear and low fluid pressure.
We have rectified a lot of overheating on these in disco 1's by fitting an HSE 4.6 auto cooler.

it really does seem to me now that there is excessive slippage going on in there now that i think about some of the low-traction situations - was beginning to think the disco wasn't as capable as i had read, and that's coming from a one-time feroza driver... ;-)

if its slipping like you say....thats a warranty issue i would say....
a simple stall test should give the answer to that.....but let the dealer do.....
if anything should go wrong....they will be responsible...not you.....
(works out cheaper for you that way.....)
