might be the p gasket behind the timing cover between the block and timing cover mine was weeping a little and i never picked it up a mate of mine that can smell coolant at a hundred pacers said your leaking coolant

at a closer look it was the problem

You could also check your welch plugs. Mine did the leaking/weeping thing from a welsh plug for quite some time and I ignored it, until it got much bigger and lost enough coolant to cook the head.

Have you checked the lttle hole at the bottom of your water pump..when they are on the way out they start to drip from there

How old is your engine? If you've got an early (pre-'97 ish) 300TDi then chances are it may well be the 'P' gasket behing the water pump, it's a known problem. LR have changed the design since & specified longer bolts too.

Have a look behind the waterpump, where it meets the block. If it's leaking there, that's the 'P' gasket gone. If it does need replacing then it's not too difficult and takes approx 2hrs to do.

Camel Landy. Did L/R use the later P gasket in any models? I had a coolant leak (could never locate it), tightened all hose fittings and it stopped. (suspect it was the heater pipe back of head)
It still shows slight but inconsistant bubbles in the header tank, idling or revved. 180000km, never overheated, no dramas!
Close inspection of the P gasket (that is, as close as a torch lets you look)seems to be a metal shim with a plastic covering, not paper composition. No leak detected there.It is 9/97 build.

It is a 96 defender, the comp plate actually says late 95, so im thinking the p gasket might be it

i never would have noticed it , but the baby was asleep, and i had to do things outside, under torch light, and bingo.

I feel a bit better for your info, knowing its not a real bad thing.

llandro, it sounds like you have the later style gasket.

roadkill - As always, you're better off changing the gasket sooner rather than later. It can last for ages in its current state but when it lets go, it'll p1ss everywhere!!!!
