    Easy one for ya

Umm....Dumb question really but I need to know so I can play with the idle bolt on our Disco (97 300TDi)

On the tacko whats the next smaller mark below the 1.000rpm mark?......is it 750rpm or 500rpm.

I was looking at it and cant make up my mind! There is the 0 mark then another, then the one Im asking about, then 1k mark.

    Any help please?

Oh by the way what the hot idle speed? From memory its about 700rpm?? Is that right?

Working logically (so I am most probable wrong) if you have a 0 mark, then 1, then another then 1k

They should be in steps of 333r, so 0, 333r, 666r then 1k

    (r = recuring past 10 decimal places)

The mark under 1,000rpm is 750 then under that is 500, then 0. Doesnt realy make sense but thats what they do. I suspose cos you couldn't get a engine to idle at 250 so they leave it out

    Great....Thanks very much...just the info I needed.

I didnt think it was 500 as it sounded a little high in rpm.

Ok now hot idle rpm....does about 700 +/- sound right?

Are you setting idle for 700 in drive cos then in N or P it will have to be higher so set about 900 in N or P then it should drop to 700 in D....... I think

Ive set it at 750 (on the mark below the 1K rpm mark) when in normal temp and in Park.

Just found it should idle at 720 +- 20 while hot . So the 750 mark is close enough for me for a start.

I dont want to set to low because Its just a pain on cold mornings (Southern Victoria Cold -4+)....I thought it was fuel or some other prob ie battery, fuel claging up, glow plugs, just takes a little pump of the gas to get over the early morning start up.....come to think of it it just like trying to get my wife out of bed on a cold morning...

Ive always tried a slightly different track when setting the idle on autos with aircon.. (assuming the aircon does not have a throttle advance tied to the system)

turn on the aircon, have someone in the car with the foot on the brakes start the engine cold and immediately put it in gear, let it idle for about 20 seconds then wind in the idle till it stalls. wind it out about 1/4 of a turn and restart.

it should start and sound a little slow, lock it off here and take it for a warm up run... when it gets back with the aircon on and gearbox in gear your idle should be near bang on. a little high when the air con is off or you put it in park.
