What about the coil? I've heard of them doing whacky things like this.![]()
Driving home from NSW over the last few days everything was running nicely until...
The vehicle started strange behaviour where it started to 'stutter' for a minute or two at a time. We first noticed it going up a hill, but then it seemed to happen just 'now and then' at random intervals. It also seemed (most times) to be under acceleration.
Symptom was like a very brief loss of power for just a moment, then resume normal operation, then repeat.
We had considered:
gearbox - doubt this because it was happening even between say 80-100kph when vehicle was already in top gear and not changing gear.
engine - however tacho showed no deviation in revs when this strange behaviour manifested itself.
dirty fuel / injectors / pickup - not sure on this ?
When we pulled over, let the vehicle cool, and checked fluid levels etc we found:
trans fluid - normal.
engine oil - bloody heck that's low. I seem to have a leak somewhere (have known this before I left but thought it had been sorted. Obviously not). Question is - would low oil levels manifest itself in this sort of behaviour ?
We topped up the oil, and poured a bottle of Wynn's injector cleaner/fuel treatment stuff into the fuel tank for good measure.
This seemed to go well for a while, but the problem seems to have reappeared.
I'll go out shortly and recheck the levels (see if there's still any engine oil left) but perhaps someone can offer assistance as to what I should be looking for ?

fuel filter clogged or vapourisation or the ignition module would be my first ports of call..
has it only done it on one load of fuel?

Maybe you have taken on a load of wet fuel?
Bung a couple of cups of Metho in & mix it up with some fuel on top. That should sort it if there is water laying in the bottom of the tank. I don't think Injector Cleaner by itself, would scavenge water.
How long since the fuel pump has been checked/replaced.

I has same problem last week in the Desert.
Running fine then spluttering.....then ok again and then splutter splutter.
The fuel pump was the culprit.
On my Disco I have a shraider (sp) valve on the fuel rail. This is great for checking the pressure with a cheaply made pipe fitting and gauge.
Good pressure is 42lbs or there abouts...can someone confirm this figure please because I have modified my regulator to increase the pressure slightly.
Use a genuine sender and pump unit though....the OEM ones are not worth the saving.
Regards.
Ouch. What's a fuel pump run to ? $ wise ?
