Just had the same fault in a 110, '04. Rear differential pinion failure, and it was done under warranty. Remove the tailshaft and gently rotate the pinion flange by hand, it will feel notchy or have tight spots. This is another great idea, fitting P38 diffs to fenders...

There has been a tech bulletin put out by LR regarding a noise in TD5 Defender rear diffs. The repair is to remove the pinion flange and use Loctite on the splines to alleviate any movement.

They have already replaced our whole diff centre and I'm pretty sure we have this noise

My rear started doing that when I had the locker, maxi axles and 4.11's put in. It so far hasn't done anything weird, and it does it only when the forces are reversed - thats not to say much for it in the long term.
    Cheers

Had the same problem with the rear diff in my Def90.

It took around ten return visits to the dealer for them to sort out the problem.

It ended up being the rear diff pinion fault that BigJon mentioned. After it was fixed as per the LR tech bulletin, I haven’t had any unusual noises or clunking from the rear diff.

Captain Rightfoot, the dealer initially replaced the diff centre on my 90 when I first noticed this problem too. After the diff centre was replaced, it seemed to fix the problem for a while, but the noise soon returned. After that it took a long time for the service manager to accept that something was wrong with the rear driveline. I was told numerous times that the noise was the normal free-play in the driveline.

I didn’t accept that explanation and persisted until the problem was fixed. Maybe give the dealer another call and mention the Tech Bulletin, they should know all about it and finally be able to fix it properly.

Hey Simon mine too, i have the maxidrive and axles fitted to mine and it clicks mainly when the CDL is engaged, it's been driving me nuts, not because of the noise but not knowing where it's coming from

Have you spoken to Mal about it or not bothered and just ignore it.

Wow... that's great. I will mention that next time I'm in.

Does anyone know the TSB number or where I can find it and print it out and hand it to them. I like doing that sort of thing
