Octane rating is all about how much the fuel can be compressed until it goes bang and causes pinging / knocking.... other factors like head design play a large part of it.
So generally the higher the compression rating the higher octane fuel is required.
My old 97 Statesman runs 8.4:1 so std unleaded is all thats needed
My 94 Calibra runs 10.8:1 so is very grumpy with anything but premium
The D2 runs 9.34:1 so is reasonably high (hence the question)
Normally the knock sensor will retard the timing to assist "pinging" but this of course leads to a decrease in power and an increase in fuel consumption
