Exclamation TD5 oil pump bolt thread.

Have just finished reading the thread relating to the Oil pump bolt lack of Loctite. Mine is a '99 defender with 143 K on the clock. And touch wood this problem hasn't happened to me. Has anybody had problems with a motor with this amout of K's on it.
Is it an easy job to remove the sum? Can it be done lying on your back?
When the bolt is removed does anything fall apart?
On a different note has anybody had problems with the Harmonic balancer coming loose and spiting the serpentine belt?
Mine seized an idler pulley at 135K and snapped the belt. Had just come back from a 7500k trip to Qld the day before, very lucky
Had the vehicle towed away and another pulley and belt fitted.
This lasted 200k's and started to shred. Had another pulley fitted, paid for labour costs and new belt.
This belt lasted approx 200k's before it broke, this time getting behind the Harmonic balancer and destroying the front engine oil seal.
On further investigation noticed the the harmonic balancer bolt had come completely loose to a point where the fan could not turn.
Got a mate this time to change the belt and tighten the Harmonic balancer.
Was amazed to find out that there is no keyway on the balancer,
Ended up having to use loctite on the balancer. That was 6 months and 8000k's ago.
Is this a common occurance seizing idle pulleys, I believe it is on 300TDI's.
Thanks for your responces in advance.
    Mal.

I've got 125,000ks on my TD5 Disco, i spoke to Peter Davis from T.R.Spares about this and he said to me that it can happen no matter how many Ks are one the car.

I'm getting mine looked at and having the bolt removed and loctited back on for peace of mind, at $235 it's cheap insurence.

There a large civil court case going on in the UK about this at the moment and from what i've heard it doesn't look good for Land Rover UK.

Apparently LR don't recognize this as a warrenty issue and also have never had a recall to fix it either

I did mine at 150,000km's at the same time I was doing the head, the bolt had started to undo and had damaged the oil pump shaft had to replace the oil pump assembly and that is a pain in the butt.

easy to pull the sump of just keep the bolts in order as some are different lengths and get a new bolt for the sprocket, and talking about warranty I wonder how long before LR is done over the ABS modulator fault in the earlier vehciles.
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

If you drop the sump as far as it can go there enough room to at least see the pump. I wasn't clever enough to do mine at the time but my just do it with the current round of work. Anyone know which of the locktite's to use?

    Yep that's me.

Get it done mate. Mine went at 160,000 k's. For a couple of hundred dollars, you may just save yourself - as was my case - upwards of $11,000....SWMBO was driving when it happened, I was punching out the zeds, so I'll always blame her!!

I know of at least 3 others that this has happened to since mine. I understand one is taking it to court.

Baz - good man is that Peter Davis. He looks after my disco.

    Cheers

    Thumbs up oil pump bolt

yep have done a few for bolt coming loose and distroyed engine but have removed many sumps and checked and found only one loose...BUT...cheap insurance to have removed and loctited and you can then fit modified sump gasket at same time..
