    Electric Thermo Fan running Constantly

Never really paid much attention to it before but I have recently noticed that my thermo fan on my 02 Disco ES TD5 runs constantly. So I did a bit of checking and it seems that the ECU has a constant output to the Fan Relay. As I expected, unplug the relay the fan stops. I think that the ECU might have an input to it constantly on to tell it to give a output to the fan relay. My only problem is that I am unable to find all the possible inputs that could cause this. I know one of them is driven by the AC but there are probably more. I have the rave manual and have looked through the electrical drawings but it is hard to establish what inputs drive this output. Without having to take it to a Stealer, I would be most appreciative of some technical inputs from the Guru's.

Just a quick guess here - haven't had time to study the diagrams yet - but I would have thought that the fan was operated either by a temp sensor somewhere - or by the pressure switch (high press) in the ac system.

I'll have a check through later.

according to Rave it's a combination of..........wait for it

Vehicle speed !!! and external air temperature

Also remember that if the air conditioning is on the fan will run if the ignition is on - irrespectie of whether the engine is running or not and irrespective of what the engine temp is.

    Hi Robbo
Mine is doing it too with aircon off.
Unfortunately I think you will find you have the dreaded "oil in the harness" fault.Remove the connector on the front left on the head,be carefull as Ive proven the brittle clips on mine and now have it wired in place,if its oily there is the problem.
Mine started leaking at about the same time as the head gasket.
Now has a new injector harness but as the oil is all the way to the ECU it is still happening.
When Richard(Kie4) did the headgasket his advice was to keep cleaning the connectors with brake cleaner untill the oil eventually goes away as the source is now stopped.
She doesnt start as smootly and stalls very easily so I suspect there could be another issue or 2 floating around in the oil.

I had it on my 03 (not 99 as initially stated) TD5 and the ecu had to be replaced. I suspect it was caused by an out-of-range signal (too high or too low - me doing some testing) from the coolant temp sensor and the code could not be cleared from the ecu. A blown head gasket may also cause the temp to go out of range, although it didn't on mine.

I had it recently on my 03TD5 (again) and there was a fault code in the ecu due to the coolant temp having had an out-of range (too low (not high)) and the ecu maintained the fans running as a precaution. The fault was able to be cleared. (Also me doing some more testing - as the high temp light on the TD5 DOES NOT WORK unless it gets to 127 deg, I have built a monitoring/alarm unit that translates the temp signal that is sent from the ecu to instruments.)

Correction: Incorrectly said problem was with my 99 but it was with my 03 both times.

    Hi Guys
Does anybody know if this "temp out of range" fault also leads to the ECU operating the engine at a lower power output to protect the engine????
Time to find a rovercom to plug into I think.

This was the case with D1's but not D2's - sorry not sure about late freelanders - the early ones did same as D1's

Graeme is there any way you can reset the fault codes on the ECU without Rovacom or similar?
If the coolant temp sensor was out of range wouldn't this cause the temp gauge to play up?

My old dunga 87 Rangie are operated off a thermo sensor screwed onto the top radiator hose mont. Doesn't work, fans stay on constantly and the Rangie never overheats so I'm not going to play around with it
