the dreaded "oil in the harness" fault

At the moment my mind is thinking would the oil be able through an electronic component like a diode - or use a bridge of a different metal - that was sealed in a compound - and have this external to the rocker box

So whilst the oil may travel as far as the component or bridge it shouldn't travel any further.

I will get my head around this - eventually - and I'll do some oil bath tests.

I will buy a harness (well the bit that sits in the rocker) and simulate temperatures and signals and see what I come up with.

I will get on to Richard(Kie4),I wonder if he has my old one or one from work?

So if you included a plug into the loom just out of the engine, then it would be very difficult for the capillary action to continue past this. Assuming decent spacing between the wires at the plug then perhaps this will also solve shorting problems through the oil, and if the oil is coming through then it will just drip out in a harmless location. This would probably be an easy way to do it assuming you could work a soldering iron and had a little sense in choosing a location for the plug.

It's seven on the diagram including 2 commons 1 common for 2 and 5, the other for 1,3 and 4

.........but until I see one I am not sure if the commons terminate/join before / as they leave the rocker or afterwards.

Not sure if just a connector/plug would do or if you would need to put in a 'physical' barrier - I am leaning towards a diode - in a sealed capsule ..........

............but that may change.

If anyone has an old harness they are about to throw away - one I can play with - that might be handy

There is an internal harness and an external one that can be unplugged. The oil obviously travels through the plug.

Yes Graeme you are right.
BUT,the connector is on the underside of the head and the female plug is the lower of the 2 collecting all the oil running into it.

Yep. I haven't inspected the plug, but it might be like the tail-light assemblies where dust travels through the pin holes.

I just pulled the red plug from my fenders ECU guess what it's got oil in it. The truck is running fine at present. Short term solution, do I spray it with wd40 or metho and put it back till I can get another injector harness. Also how much are they are where can I get one at a reasonable price.

Retail on the injector loom (AMR61023) should only be about $155 from a dealer. About another $80ish for a rocker cover gasket.

I haven't seen this loom problem nor the loom, but find it interesting as well as frustrating for the owners of these vehicles, as a bit of common sense planning by LR in the beginning would not have allowed this problem to arise in the first place. Or am I being simplistic?;)

Is there not some sort of epoxy kit that would allow epoxy to be injected into the loom around the cables as a barrier? Non leaking looms only I would think.
Oil would penetrate this far & drain out of the loom without getting to the plugs.

Are the new looms an improvement on the original or still the same?


As I said, simplistic I may well be.:)

A case in point is the supposed poor quality of the diagphram of the Vacuum Advance module. Shirley LR Engineering could have forseen the problems related to this in Australian conditions just to mention one country where these are used. Maybe they think that Britain finishes at Lands End & they should speak to the Vehicle Despatch Section.:D
