    TD5 reluctant to start

This morning we had trouble starting the Disco in that it didn't fire up first pull as normal.

We turned it over 5 or 6 times to no avail then left it for 5 minutes and it started first pull.

It is regularly serviced and I am pretty good at fault finding with petrol engines but diesel is out of my knowledge range.

My initial thoughts are fuel related.

    Where should I start?

We had something similar a couple of times now, all Landrover could come up with was it was to do with the security cosing, IE sometimes when you put the key in you can catch the security system inbetween a code change, sugestion and works for us, is to get out of the car, lock it with key then unlock and try again.

    1. Do you have an immobiliser? If so, it is the number one suspect.

    2. Otherwise, your guess that it is fuel related is probably right. If I remember rightly it has an in tank fuel pump, and it may be on the way out.

    3. Other electrical problems; but I would have thought these would cause it to default to limp home mode, which would not stop it starting.

Thinking back over the event and after the comments I am now leaning towards the immobiliser as my wife took the key out and started the process again so probably revisiting the disarming process.

Guess we shall wait and see if it happens again.

Gee this is a good site

    Hi Harry
Was it that new key you bought????
John, the immobiliser on the D2 is part of the computer system,so probably an unlikely cause unless the battery in the remote is flat.
Harry has she been driping diesel on your carport, the fuel pressure regulator is a common problem,if you can smell diesel and there are little puddles(2 of) after shutdown it could be that the fuelpump needs to pump longer to make up for lost pressure, mine went recently, got one ex Karcraft(MAKE SURE YOU GET THE NEW GASKET AS ITS AN UPGRADE) and needed extra cranking at times for a start.

Could you hear the fuel pump whirring/priming?

How much fuel do you have in the tank?

No its not the key, that is another story in that the first one didn't arrive and a replacement is being posted today.

Also no leaks, yes that was no leaks, the fuel regulator was replaced about 6 months ago.

So far it has only happened once and as the Suzuki is stiil being put back together after the rust and paint job we were slightly panicking this morning about how we were going to get to work, but she came good.

Fuel was a full tank and the only sound was the car turning over but not firing, in a petrol engine I would have said no spark.

Hopefully the problem has gone away like the steering lock problem that caused me to join the RAC for a squirt of WD40 last Thursday

Around your ignition lock you have a small transponder/tranceiver.

Your imoboliser on you key has to be within a certain distance of this otherwise your car will not start. It will turn over, but not start.

Sometimes your imobilise and the transponder loose contact with each other. The nest thing to do is to remove the key, lock you car and then try again

Its happened to me a number of times

    Yep .

    That's what I reckon happened.

We have had the green flashing lights before and solved it by locking the car and starting again I guess this is another variant of the same type of thing.

AHHH the green flashing light (sport and economy light) we found out what this means, it is suposed to be when you put the key in and turn it to start too fast, the system doesnt register properly, so we have made a habbit of waiting for the glo light to go out then start it, it hasnt happened since.
