    Aircon compressor fittings

Hi all, I've found a leak in one of the two aircon "taps" that come out of the back of the compressor on my '93 Disco'.
Is this a part that can be pulled apart and serviced? It obviously unbolts from the compressor. I imagine that there is a seal in there that is leaking which in theory could be replaced.
If it can't be serviced, is this a "Landrover Only" part or is there an aftermarket part out there.
    Cheers, Pete'

There's a thread somewhere, few weeks or so past, about aircon compressors, seems some of us, including me, have had an issue with the squeaky bearing; maybe the thread will be of help....

    Good luck, GQ

If it is leaking where the fitting bolts onto the head, it could either be n 'O' ring or if it's a Rotolock fitting (and I'm guessing it might be) it will be a square section teflon ring. If it's a Rotolock valve, it may only need the nut tightened and then the refrigerant charge checked, etc. Nuts on Rotolocks can back off if a vibration is in the same plane as the motion to undo the nut.
This will be a generic part. Anyone that services auto air conditioning can fix it.
Remembering that this will be an old R12 system, a refrigerant blend (not straight R134A) compatible with mineral oil will have to be used to re-charge it. (if it hasn't already been converted)

Where you say TAPs, can you give a little more detail - or better still a photo, as if it is what I think it is and Rick may correct me, but it may be the 'service ports' or sometimes called charging ports.

If it is one of those it may just need a new schreader valve (bit like a tyre valve) - but to repair that yoy have to remove the old one resulting in total loss of gas charge.

If it is an R12 system, the you will not be able to recharge it - R12 is (or rather shouldn't be available) R134a doesn't operate properly in R12 systems - without major changes.

Where abouts are you in the country, as there are alternatives to R134a and R12 that can be used without eexpensive conversions.

    Ladas and Rick130,

Yes it is the charging port section. Not where the hoses go on to charge it but rather the handle or "Tap" at the top which you open and close. There is a leak around the tap where it goes into the fitting. Tightning it in either direction doesn't fix it.

I've already lost the gas. We "may or not have been" putting in some more and as we were checking it with soapy water we could see a fast leak at that point.

I've heard that a formula called icecon49 or something like that can be put in without changing filters and o-rings but I can't find it through google so I've probably got the wrong spelling.

    Any thoughts?

    Personally I wouldn't use Icecon49................

A much better option, if you can find somebody locally is using Hydrocarbon refrigerants.

No changes of anything - except - if the system has been open, and it's been a while since it was serviced I would recommend changing the receiver drier - it's not expensive, and really should be changed as a service item anyway.

Origin has a product as do HyChill - but just not sure where you'd get it in Gosford.

If its a plate with the suction and discharge lines underneath you will proberly find the O ring might be shot.Try tightening it and leak test it with soapy water ( more soap than water)Palmolive dish liquids the best.Being 1993 it could still be R12,if it is get it recharged with either SP34e or 34m.Try to avoid R134a if possible as it's not as efficent on an older system.Try to avoid Isceon 49 as it usually has very high discharge pressures and does not carry the oil that well.

    Regards Ezy
