Will look under it, take the wheels off etc tommorrow, weather permiting
My Disco was making a similar sound recently and I first thought it was something behind the backing plate. But then the noise got really bad and turned out to be a wheel bearing.
Jacked up the car and grabbed the wheel, it wobbled so its the wheel bearings.
It is fitted with Maxidrive axles, are the bearings the same for these axles?
Thanks to everybody for your advise.
Mal
in the tdi's the bearings are the same, i'm sure the axles would have been designed to suit the existing bearing on a td5
When replacing wheel bearings it is advisable to replace the locknut as well. Don't forget to peen the locknut in the appropriate spot or it will come loose. A few months ago we had a TD5 Deefer in here with all 4 locknuts unpeened! It suffered from total bearing failure on one wheel because it had come so loose. (Tourist vehicle, not usually serviced by us).
I would go with the front disc backing plate too. May be lose. Just get under and bend them both back and then see what happens. Only a 2 min job . Would be the first thing i would check

Get under and give the brake shields a wriggle. Don't even need to jack the vehicle for this. My old 300 had a similar noise to what you describe and it turned out to be the lug on one of the shields had sheared off.
