In my old D1 I upgraded to a reference series Alpine 4" speaker - very clear and fitted in the standard mounts no worries. Sound was GREAT for a 4" - otherwise you go into door building territory (can get expensive).

I can dig out the model number if you need?

I would go for the best 4" speakers you can get/afford.

................but take some time out to listen to them before you buy, everyones perception of a good sound is very different, and whilst they will still sound different from the shop to the car it will still give you a great idea.

I consider my speakers quite heavy on base, but my wife thinks they are fine.

I wouldn't go for a larger speaker - cutting doors and panels is a pain in the bum.

i have got rockford fosgate 4" coaxils in my disco front and back

they are from the t series which is more expensive than the punch (punch being there cheaper range)

but they sound great, they don't how ever handle bass that well if you got your stereo cranked up but the clarity on them is great......unfortunatly a little to great so quite often i have to turn the stereo off as i think there is something wrong with the car

as i here strange little noises.........

but i have been told by a guy that imports rockford from the states that if you want good base with out a sub to buy rockfords 6x9's

to which i said 6x9's don't give good base because of there oval shape.....

he then said to me not these go away and listen to them and then come back and tell me that they can't give good base...........

so the only thing i was going to suggest is maybe get some good coaxils in the front and some 6x9's in the back as i rekon you might have space in the back holes if not you can get spacers for 6x9's so you can put them in they wont be so noticable back there and there should be no cutting or trimming

Dullbird amplify the 4"drivers that will make a heap of difference to them, but saying that there is only a certain amount some p1ssy little 4" drivers can do (no matter what brand they are)

Personally I'd go for 6"split system, you should be able to fit 6" drivers in the door panels on a D1 easily.

Why 6x9's, you can get more BASS from 7x10 drivers

I was talking about the D1 interior of Dullbirds, I haven't touched my stereo yet the speakers need replacing in the near future but will have to wait. The crap sound is driving me nuts but the 15" subwoofer in the box in the boot (when I have it in, spends more time in the garage over the last few weeks) makes up for the lack of bass

no you cant, not in the orig 4'' spot, and even then down the bottom of the door in the front corner you can, but still have to cut the door a bit and add about 16mm of spacer.
there is way to many chanells and stuff for the power window crap..

    cheers phil

5" in both front and rear is all you can fit in the standard holes.

    cheers
