Sounds like your booster is gone or you have a vacuum leak.
Maybe the vacuum pump?
Or a beer bottle stuck under the pedal??

Greetings all
Had a fun experience today, went to stop the forward momentum of the beast (97 disco tdi) and had almost no pedal movement. She eventually stopped but it was a near thing. It feels like ive lost my brake booster. Even the old series 3 stopped better than that. Any thoughts?

Damn beer bottles, but seriously the vacume line wouldnt happen to intersect with the air intake just above the turbo? The reason i ask is because i modified the 45 degree slice section of this intersection the other day to stop it rubbing on the intercooler pipe.

The vacuum pump is on the drivers side of the engine. It is a black canister looking device, near the fuel lift pump. The vacuum line will go from there to the booster.
It would be the first place I'd be looking, you may have a leak on the 'modification'Originally Posted by Mick-Kelly
You can modify the air intake to your hearts content on a Tdi, it won't make any difference to the vacuum created by the camshaft driven mechanical vacuum pump.
My money is on the vacuum pump. I just replaced mine after the same symptoms. Lucky mine failed when on sandy track and not with the wife driving the kids to school!
Thanks be to you all for sage advice. After much head scratching and staring into the engine while muttering monosylabic nothings I grabbed hold of the offending vacume hose only to be shocked as it came away in my hand. The t piece had perished and broken and had been hiding from view behind another pipe. Well one trip to supercheap and $3 latter problem is solvered.

It is often the most simple thing that stuffs us all..............Originally Posted by Mick-Kelly
Great to hear you found, and solvered the problem
Just wondering, is there anyway of measuring the vacuum, so you can work out if there is a leak in a hose ?
