What we really need to do is tell the factory to PUT DECENT DIFFS AND AXLES IN!!!

They removed the only decent diff from the lineup - salisbury. And are still persisting with spiral bevel crap when the rest of the world has moved on to HYPOID.

And out of toyota, nissan and LR - guess which one has the smallest diameter axles (halfshafts)...

Like everyone else I can't understand why people think Tojo's are bullet proof They suffer as much as any 4WD if not more, especially when taken seriously off-road.

As for the D3, my first thought on see the facts/figures was "its a bloody tank". However, I will add to that and say my one disappointment in the Disco's is they have all weighed too much for the short (100") wheel base. Something I hoped to see improved on in the D3, but sadly no.

If you really want to see a heavy "4WD" (may be the wrong term there) check the Nissan Pathfinder's weights. For its size it must be made of concrete. I don't know how they are making newer cars so much heavier, must be all the electronics I suppose

Crash safety is the main culprit for extra weight.

Note to tombraider: I like the D3, but its not alloy and weighs three tonnes rolling (at least), a full tonne heavier than my D1; I go places where weight is an issue, as is salt based corrosion, so I drive a alloy D1.... I've had it weighed with me in it and it tips the weighbridge at 1950kg....

As I've said before the D3 is great, but it's not a D1, they're completely different, sharing only a nameplate.

I like to travel in remote places and my D1 gets the occasional scrape, bang or gouge - I just wouldn't do that to a $70,000+ vehicle...and I when very remote, I like stuff I can at least understand or fix -LR doesn't supply software for the laptop pluggable to a remote D3... and if a shock lets go, I'm buggered if i'm paying $2k for a replacement... Off roaders need to be easy.

The adventure is the adventure - the vehicle should not be problematic.

And a D1 has enough 'issues' as it is... the D3 has potential and kinetic issues as often noted here and elsewhere... which is not your issue.. LR are building fascinating things, enormously capable, but unfixable when crossing the, say, Simpson Desert (and I've done that in a 70 model Fairlane).

Man, you have a freak disco then!!!

LR list kerb weigh @ 2060kg for the D1 V8 Auto (Dry)

BTW, D1 are steel door frames, roof, chassis, floor panel etc....

My V8 Disco 1 Empty weighed over 2100kg... Loaded with me, my mate 2 swags, fridge etc... and she was pushing 2800kg easily.

    I'd check your weighbridge!!!!

But hey, if it doesnt suit your needs fair enough.... But seriously, where does one need to go that a 2.7t 4WD cant go? (Just curious)

Considering my Defender runs at 2700kg with a full tank and no driver!
