I assume you could mount it to make changing the filter easier. That would be about the only benefit I can think of. (What were they thinking when they installed the oil filter right next to the turbo!).

...where it is so hard to tighten/loosen even after waiting for everything to cool down.

    OK. Reasons are
    1. Use cheaper filters.
    2. Seing the second hand oil cooler fell though found it would be easier and cheaper to move the filter and run a large external oil cooler. This cooler would still be water cooled but at least 4 times the size so would regulate temps better.
So $2-300 sounds so much nicer than $1,000 and I have been told I am improving the system which should hekp with a modified vehicle. Setup might also provide extra cooling for the coolant system.
    3. Easy to replace in the future.

It would have been done today but I'm still waiting on the call to go into town to have the block of aluminium measured up and machined.

    Snip

I thought that a lot of R&D went into the centrifugal oil filter, which is part of being able to push the normal oil change interval out to 20,000 km.

So I'm not sure I'd run a different type of filter.

The TD5 has 2 filters, the full flow and the centrifuge.
