Oil Recommendation for LT95 4 speed box and Isuzu 4bd1

By the way, probably irrevalent to the main topic here, but didn't the army also modify the Centre diff pinion bearings too? Maybe...

Something with the Centre diff, anyway...

It is slightly more involved than that, but yes, easy to convert a standard t-case.

Just thought I would add to this thread a little....

Recently changed gearbox/Tcase oils in LT95 from whatever was in it (appeared to be engine oil in main box and EP90 in Tcase) to Castrol VMX80.

The difference is massive! Much smoother changes and even seems to be a little quieter.

Very happy with it and would reccomend it to others with LT95's.:)

Just from the comments on thick vs thin, it appears that some may not be aware that gear oil viscosity numbers are different to engine oil.

I am sure someone has the exact spec, but an 80 gear oil is about as thick as a 30-40 engine oil.

So VMX80 or similar GL4 may be the ducks guts for an LT95.

I had one in Saudi where someone had put EP in the transfer and the thrust washers had disappeared. Thye must have used the same in the gearbox as my oil pump shaft was broken, assuming it was EP90 which is like a straight 40-50 .
I tried Penrite HPR 30 in mine and couldn't change gear when hot. Otherwise used a 20/50 with no problems.

I have two bottles of Penrite Hyperoid Gear Oil SAE 80w-90 API GL5.
I thought it would be OK for the TC case but it seems this is not a good idea, but OK for Diff's.

Is this right?

Rick130 has been discussing manual transmission fluid.

Barney and some others have been saying gear oil.

Do not mix up these terms.

Do not ask for gear oil. Do not use it in your gearbox, if the label on the container says gear oil.

The label on the container should say manual transmission fluid, and GL4.

As Rick said manual transmission fluid, was not around when instructions were written for the LT95. But is now available and was developed for modern manual transmissions. It is the superior lubricant for use in the LT95, LT85, LT77 and R380 gearboxes. It's viscosity is lower and will not cause the problems that gear oil cause. It has additives that are better for gear life than engine oil, or automatic transmission fluid.
