Is the 97 Disco different in this regard to a 94?

My swivel hubs have three plugs. Drain, level and fill. You undo them all to drain and then put the bottom drain plug back in and fill it to the level plug through the top fill plug and then put in level and fill plugs.
This is what the RAVE CD says to do and I think I used the same oil as in the transfer case which I think was an 80w/90.

The Disco 97 (not sure when it changed) only has the fill one, to empty u just undo the top bolt and it just comes out of the seal, well thats the way i do it

FYI.

Repco wants $18.50 for the 500ml Penrite Semi Fuild Grease, whereas East Coast Spares wants $10.50 !!!!!

Also can get it direct from the Penrite Warehouse in Bayswater for $7, so guess where I'm going, might get a couple of bottles for that price !

I reckoned I payed around $7 ea from the Penrite distributor in Perth for the last 2 I bought,but wasnt prpared to post it incase I looked a goose
For the Series landy owners with leaky swivels and steering box 2 bottles should do the 3 items.

Yes, older discos have swivel hubs which require oil, in the late 90's they replaced these with the one shot method so there is no need for a drain hole just a fill hole as the one shot stuff is supposed to be permanent until the hub needs rebuilding. I fill mine with oil, 350ml, as per the fluid volumes in the users manual, and to change it i undo the bolts on top to take the tension of the bearing and the oil runs out. The problem with the oil filled ones it that they are designed to leak slightly as oil weaping from the seal keeps it clean, the one shot doesnt do this, as a result i have trouble knowing how much is in the hub as the fill hole isnt at the 350ml mark its much higher. Designed to leak? I think not.

I helped a mate swap his swivel housings to the older type, so he had drain holes for the oil. Pretty easy job and 2nd hand swivel housings are cheap. Just be aware that the brake caliper bolts changed from metric course in the early swivels to metric fine in the late - so don't fit the wrong ones.

Oil is the only way to go! Where is this level hole though? I always fill to the level of the filler hole, and never have problems.

I agree, oil is the only way to protect and service swivel housings and their internals. I convert quite a few by drilling the bottom of the housing with a M6x1 thread and countersinking to use a o ring as a seal under a socket head bolt. this allows frequent (every service) changing of swivel oils. Mine comes out clean everytime even after wading etc.
