The twin fans are controlled, most of the time it only runs one the second kicks in if needed and they are connected to the second battery probably because it was that side things mounted on and will actually run still once the ignition is off if hot.
As for the traffic there was a truck in front but I expect it to idle not moving with the aircon and stay normal. The thermostate should be new but will be checked in the process.
The water pump??? was something I was wondering about given the coolant alarm was sounding on the second drive after the incident yet the coolant level is ok. What evers going on its been an early worning because driving around in the hotter part of the day without the aircon on the gauge wont move of normal.

any chance it may just be the guage playing up........or the temp sensor.....
was the engine actually overheating......or was it just the guage saying so....

I don't think the electric fans can cope. The engine fan will move fore air and has the added benefit of the cowl which causes it to suck air across the entire radiator.
My viscous fan was on the way out when I decided what the hell give the electic jobs a go. They fit perfectly on the back of the radiator unless you new other wise you would think its factory. As they cover the hole radiator and are contained in a plastic caseing (Cowl) I imagine the cowl and surface area it pulls from are mute points it would come down to wether less big blades or more little blades pull more air???
Pretty shore its more then a gauge problem it seemed a little warm but the coolant alarm sounding as well at least confirms it wasn't flowing right.
The issue of viscous vs electric is not big blades vs little blades but the amount of air moved CFM or similar.
The electric fan manufacturers say you save 8% on fuel bills by ditching the viscous fan, and its generally accepted that it uses about 5% of engine power.5% of say 150BHP is about 7HP.
1 HP = 0.745699872 kilowatts
So 7HP =about 5KW ie 5000watts at 12 volts is about 400amps.
Your electric fans are probably about 36amps in total.
I know that the efficiencies may be different but the magnitude of the difference in air moving ability is very large.

Well worked out the answer to the problem, radiator was 40% blocked and not in real good shape to boot. Nothing a recore wouldn't fix.
Elsewhere here people were talking about a comp for the most problems, well my D1 has cost $25000 in the last 2 years (engine, gearbox, propshaft, raditator recore, electric greamlins, roof lining, windscreen, suspension, tyres) in fairness $10000 would be optional inhancements above what was needed.
It Must be love...........
