Doesn’t seem to matter what is wrong with your auto it always cost between $1,800 and $2,800 to rebuild.
MAngie thats because of the general rebuild philsophy needed for autos..
most reputable places will not take short cuts with an auto and replace/recondition everything while they are in there.
you can in a pinch goto some backyard boys and they will only repair what is needed but will/should tell you its a 30x30 concrete guarentee jobbie... (which is effectively none)
Dont get a second hand box unless the seller can prove its had a proper rebuild, done recently (so seals dont fatigue while dry) or is willing to give an unlimited warrentee on the box for at least 6 months. most autos if they are going to let go will do so in the first 3-6 months, If you think its not doing something right go back straight away and get the complaint made in writing and countersigned by the company boss.
Best of luck, what did you mean by cooked and how badly did you "cook" the auto, if your really lucky you might get away with a pan drop and filter/oil change.

Have you checked the fluid level and / or quality and/or the filter

make sure you have the right oil and the right amount, some ATX's are finniky about this...
In and of itself this problem should not be fatal to the box and wont require a major service. typically it will be a miss adjustment of the throttle sense cable.
Check the contition and quantity of the oil before preceding, if in doubt change the oil and the filter. this will also give you the advantage of having a known start point for the oil for later fault finding.
for some reason if it has become too tight then the ATX will think your trying to put full noise down and wont let it shift. to test, find the cable that goes from the gearbox to the throttle linkage somewhere and disconnect it from the thorttle linkage side... check it for movement and apply a little Auto fluid to it and give it a jiggle, now take the vehicle for a drive without the throttle sense line connected..
let me know what happens... in theory it should now shift up early and not kick down when you get on the noise.
