Where is your reverse on the gearbox?
Hi all,
Sorry if this is the wrong place to be asking all of this, and if so, please feel free to move it to a more appropriate area. I looked for myself but couldn't decide where to put them, so here goes.
I have always had old Holdens and newer model Commodores, this is my first 4x4. When I got it, I was told it's a S2 Discovery, but apon posting a piccy of it, I was informed by a few forum members that it's actually a S1. So I guess I got stooged there. See for yourself ...

It cost $7200 on road, with 12 months warranty on practically everything. The guy even went so far as to say that the gearbox has only just been replaced. He said that reverse would now be in a different spot to what it tells me on the gearknob. Does that means it's a S2 box, or from some other earlier/later model?
Also, I was told by a forum member that it's a "pre-update" small headlight version. What exactly was updated and why? Can I swap the lights for the updated version ones without much hassle? IS there any difference or just aestetic (sp) value?
Also, I can't seem to find child restraint anchor points. Does this vehicle have any, or spots that I can drill into to mount some?
Thanks guys,
Patrick
Where is your reverse on the gearbox?
Scrap that gearbox question ....... It appears to be where the gearknob actually says it is. I need to switch to decaf I think ...![]()
it should be pre 1994, and if it has a manual G/B it most probably will be a diesal??
then it should be a 200 tdi?? i think. most the V8's were almost all auto's.
in saying that it should be an R380 G/B, if they say the reverse is in a differant spot then it may have had an LT77 fitted?? dont know why they would have done this though?? dosnt make any sense??
as for the child restraints, there are threaded mount holes in the section above the rear door. they are the same thread as the seat belt bolts, dont know what they are for also??
and the yes the headlights can be upgraded to the series 1 ''update'' style lights, its not a straight swap, it involves cutting the headlight capping out of a S1 update shell and swapping them into yours!
if your a pannel beater by trade it would be easy![]()
cheers phil
the updated ones got a new interior styling as well
Hi Blythe here you will have to look on your fire wall to see when it was built.
At a guess it was built in 93 or July to September 94, that was the change over months Discoveries went to the 3.9Lt V8 and the 34 splin axles. but still had the 93 Dash and head lights, if it is the V8 it also has about five vee belts hanging off the front of it
Landrover year model go from financial year not calendar like everyone else. so when they changed over to the 94 model in July 94 they used up the last of the 93 bits and pieces up until September 94 then they switched over to the new upgraded dash and headlights.
I own one and it is a pain in the bum some times because when you talk to Mr landrover, ask for the vee belts and give them the Vin number they will give you a serpentine belt, have fun trying to explain that they are wrong. Even showing the parts man didn't help (go after market cheaper and better service)
They are a great car and excellent 4wd, they just have some unique quirks have fun with it.

You can swap over headlights and blinkers to later style - but why would you bother?Originally Posted by ElDubya
Best improvement is to fit a "Headlamp Wiring Upgrade Harness" from ARB or Piranha [cost about $130] and is an easy D-I-Y plug-in exercise.
Then fit H4 130 W/90 W (high/low beam) bulbs into the upgraded headlights.......you'll be amazed at the improvement in night vision!
Next step up would be to fit 100 W or 130 W or 150 W Long Distance Driving Lights [affectionately called "Spotties]
You'll find three tapped and plastic plugged holes for child restraints just above rear tailgate opening that take standard fittings using standard extensions.
I have a Feb 94 model and it has all the updated stuff. Maybe they sold them alongside each other for a while?Originally Posted by blitz
From the pic it is definately the preupdate model. Which means it is either the 3.5 V8, early 3.9 V8 or the 200Tdi diesel.
When I was buying my Disco only a few months ago I was told all sorts of crap by dealers who didn't put photos in their ads. Only to go and have a look and find out it is a different model year etc. I stopped looking at dealers and only looked private for this very reason. Not all the private owners new what they had exactly but none of them lied about obvious differences.

As utemad said it is a series 1 (pre update) - engines as listed by utemad - if it is a 3.9 it will have orange 3.9i or V8 decals on the front guards. If it has the original manual gearbox reverse will be top left next to first - if the salesman says it has been updated it will be most likely the R380 geabox out of the upates and reverse will be under 5th.
The insides of the updates are completely different to your car, the 3.9 is a different 3.9, externally the obvious differences are smaller headlights for the pre-updates and a different grill. if it is a diessel it will be a 200TDi - the 300 TDI came out with the Series 1 Updates.
The series 2 looks different in the the body. The rear of the rear doors is a little longer and the rear taillights are mounted high - they were sold from 1999.
