    Cleaning ABS Sensors

    Hey All

Recently while driving the dash lights for my ABS, TC and Hill descent all came on in the D2. I know these are all controlled by the ABS system. I did some searching around on the forums and have found that if dust gets on the sensors or if the sensors get knocked out of place that it can affect the sensors.

So what i am asking is how does one clean the sensors? I have access to an air compressor with associated attachments. Can some one explain what i am looking for, post pics of this would be very helpful.

    Cheers

Firstly do you have brake squeal? This is what mostly sets the lights on the dash off. Brake squeal is caused by non-genuine LR pads.

    Elaborating more...

By non-genuine poor quality or poorly fitted pads, or Genuine poorly fitted pads....

the sensors need to be clean and correctly spaced....

Hubs need to be checked for free play in bearings....

ABS lines (wires) need their connectors checked for corrosion or loose fitment.

Or it could be sticky valves in the ABS modulator, so maybe need to have the codes read.

The simple answer is get the airhose or even a water hose and give the gap a good blast - if the problem still exists then look further.

Also worth checking how clean your brake fluid is.

Since I started more regular Brake fluids changes - the number of these 3 light events has reduced. LR say change every 40,000 Km.

I figure for the cost of the fluid do it every 20,000 if you use traction control a bit...

Seems to have helped my problems......... or at least the one with the 3 lights

bleeding is the same as a normal system......when you finish bleeding the brakes.....crack each nipple one at a time.....
and allow some brake fluid to dribble out.....this gravity bleed takes out any small remaining air bubbles in the system to give a better feel to the pedal....

and for everyone else who hasnt bled their brakes....you can still do this quickly....there should be a few bubbles come out at first.....
then the fluid will start to flow......

On a D2 (don't know about the D1) that wont flush the fluid trapped in the ABS pump circuit and that old fluid can still cause problems with the shuttle valve switches. It really needs Testbook to operate the ABS pump while the bleed nipples are opened to do a complete job.

    Like Graeme said..

I cheat, when I get every second service done I get the fluid changed then. I don't have testbook, my mechanic does.. Costs me very little extra - and so far has been working.
