What does "HP" stand for?
What is a repco gem engine? Why are they called this?
Can you confirm that no numbers are stamped onto the HP block?
Is the "STEEL crank, sporty cam and twin strommies" all standard inthese HP motors?

I have a choice bascially - 186 or 179 - which one should I choose and why?

pull the heads off them all - find the one in the best condition - ie: bore and head, Don't mix and match heads unless the chambers are the same size (or you know what compression you'll get)

Basically, I want to compare the guts of the 179HP to the 186..
What was the compression for the HP?
The engine no. when it left Fisherman's Bend, was stamped in about 1/2" high characters on the machined horizontal pad at the RH engine mount, behind the oil pump. It is a combination of numbers and letters, for example H26221 ( a 1963/64 149), 186S22373, JP17171, QL173173. Go to the Holden web site, click on contact us, and send your request, giving them the numbers stamped on the pad. The engine serial no. ALWAYS has a prefix. Go direct to Holden on their web site, www.holden.com.au, or 'phone them. They are the ultimate authority, after all, they made the engines and recorded the numbers.
Aside from all the other good hints your are getting it is obvious you haven;t looked at oldholdens.com, check out the FAQ-s section on motors etc, that should give you nearly all the information you are asking for.
Ask old holden guys the questions you are asking landrover guys.
Everything that the guys have put in from the block stampings to the numbers is in that section, cehcking out the guts will tell you nothing aside from bore and stroke.
It is only a couple of clicks away!

the crank, rods, everything in a 179 186 and 202 are basically the same.
202 had non adjustable rocker gear. the others were adjustable.
with the motors you have you wouldnt be able to tell the power differance between. even if one was a hi comp and one was a lo comp motor.
the only way to tell the better one is to strip the motor down and measure/check, bore, bearings crank ect.
its a holden 6 not a chev...
the repco gem engines are reco jobbies from the repco reco factory, sold as change over basis. im sure you can still buy these??
186=3.625'' bore 3'' stroke
comp ratios could be 7.7;1 or 8.8;1 or9.2;1(hi comp)
179=3.563'' bore 3'' stroke
202=3.625'' bore 3.250'' stroke
if you dont want to use any of these go to the wreckers and buy a running/tested 202 blue.
