    Advice on towing

    Hi all. Just bought our first Rangie, being a 96 model HSE. Is bog stock and will be used to tow a 21 foot, 2.5 tonne Jayco van.
    Do you guys have any tips in terms of equipment to ensure a smooth towing experience as I fear the dreaded death by airbag experience that I have been warned about if I don't set this bus up right...

    Depending on how well it balances, a load distributing hitch will help you immensely as will fiddling with the trailer brake setup to make it work as you feel most comfortable with.. ( I like the trailer to try to stop harder than the vehicle and the trailer brakes to come on first)

    then if it doesn't already have them add

    a stone deflector shield to the a frame
    a couple of jerry holders for fuel for the rover or an under camper tank.

    But have a play with it first, Towing isnt just about what other people do with their rigs, they're all different and like different things..

    IMHO give it a practice tow make comment on things you dont like then ask how people have sorted similar problems.

    Ditch The Bags

    G'day id ditch the bags and go for a good qual set of springs both front and back and sum new shockies andget your suspension sused out for worn bushes ..

    And for carrying a heavy load put proper load carrying air bags inside the rear springs

    while your at it ditch the load leveler to if it hasent allready been done

    mmmmm......Sounds like your saying he'd be better off with a RR Classic withOUT EAS!......I'd agree, I wouldn't be starting off towing a big-gish rig around with what is, after all, 10 year old EAS components.

    What might be fine for regular driving around can become an expensive exercise in replacing things that fail near the end of their service life if used for heavy duty purposes.

    With the price of repairs/replacement of EAS major components you can BUY a seperate, different RR (non-EAS) Classic for towing.......that way you'd be able to enjoy the p38a for use as a really comfortable car AND have another, good towing car that you don't have to worry about parts failures and their very high expenses.

    Hmmmmmmm. Thanks for the feedback guys. The reason I bought this thing was it was reasonable K's for it's age (179,000). It also has every receipt in the books (one owner) for parts/servicing since new and is in pretty good nick. We have a Landy/Rangie specialist down the road and it sounds like I'm gunna be spending some quality time/cash sorting the suspension. We only bought it last week and were completely blown away by how comfortable this thing was and the handling left us gobsmacked. Drove it for a day. Had to fill it before I gave it back to the dealer. That part of the experience left me with a head like a smacked bum lol!!
    At this stage my research on them leads me to the following conclusion. I think the Rangie needs:
    1. Powerchip (I had one in my last three fourbies. Just excellent in terms of power/torque gains)
    2. K&S Hi-flow is also my friend here lol.
    3. Good free flow exhaust and extractors for low down grunt.
    4. Some form of mod to the suspension. I will definitely look at heavier airbags or something of that ilk. Jeez the comfort they offer is addictive after bouncing around Oz in a V8 Cruiser lol.

    First fit top grade shocks.

    Bilstien or koni.

    use load distribution hitch.

    make sure u have 100-150 kg tow ball weight or spec.

    all will be fine.

    Thanks for that . I must say I am a touch nervous. I take it when you use the load levellers (which I have and used on last 4x4) you turn the active suspension off. I was told by city ULR that is what I do but another dealer said to leave the active suspension on when using levellers, but the owners manual says to turn it off. You can see how it can be confusing with a vehicle a little left of centre of the 4x4 market heh.

    I thought load distributing hitches are not recommended with EAS Rangies. I'll have to check my owner's manual.

    P38As don't have load leveller like earlier coil sprung Rangies. Or did you mean the load distribution system on the trailer?
