    Squealing brakes

1993 Rangie, 3.9, auto on gas.
Front brakes started squealing badly when braking lightly, so I did the following; several attempts with the 'anti-squeal brake goop', roughed up the pad material, beveled every edge of the pads, and finally threw them away! This really hurt tightwad me as they had at least half the 'meat' left.
So I fitted brand new pads from an Australian manufacturer that I have had success with before, (can't remember the name now) and lo and behold the 'no squealing' lasted about 20 mins. This was after doing the 'bedding-in' thing as recommended by the manufacturer.
    What do I do now?
These pads, and the previous ones, don't have anti-squeal shims, they are pre-gooped.
Should I try and get shims for them?
Do I have to buy new rotors to stop the squeal, the present rotors have plenty of meat on them and aren't scored in any way.
Any other options open to me?

Not trying to steal the thread here but the Mother-in-laws Disco brakes squeel slightly when driving, if going dead straight on even ground it doesn't do it, but as soon as you turn the wheel or the road changes or when the car moves around a bit it happens.
Would this be caused by worn wheel bearings?
Nipped em up a little and made a bit of difference, but soon came back.

    Vertical or horizontal?

Recently checked out my pads and they have a "crack" down the centre of each pad. Plenty of meat on em but they squeal like a pig.

Might try the high temp silicone method.
    Cheers

grab your hacksaw and cut a groove in them like this........about 3/4 of the thickness of the pad.......
and chamfer the leading edges of the pads.......

if the pads have any type of material stuck to the back of them....but only on half of the pad......
make sure it is fitted the correct way around.....the thicker section is to be on the trailing side of the pad......

take some pics of the pads front and back and post them on here if you can....

This may be in the urban myth category:

"Hard pads squeal, soft pads don't...."

In order to stop this happening, there is a remedy.

    Don't use the brakes....LOL.

(Well, I don't, don't really need 'em where I live).

there are other remedies as well.......
but im not too keen on this one as it also may reduce braking slightly......

drill some holes in the pad and put the lead from a pencil in the holes......
this acts like graphite powder on the pads and stops the squealing......
i have never used this method.....nor do i recommend it......
