If you go further, I would be going for the larger intercooler and then the ECU remapping as the last option. At thesame time I would be fitting an EGT to keep a close eye on the temps.

Like a couple of others on here, I have had trouble with my BD chip which has not really been solved (low range surging, and too much black smoke). I will be getting one of Tombraiders remaps when I get my act in order.

I have one of tombraiders intercoolers and it has been great.
    Do TD5's have catalysts?

I thought they just had a centre and rear muffler?

What about defenders? I must admit I've never seen it on our 05 TD5... maybe I'm not looking hard enough

Very well, thanks Tombraider. I haven't quite got my old fuel consumption back but it charges up hills where it struggled previously - nothing puts it to shame.

I'd like to get rid of that cat to see if the last bit of delay can be overcome and to lessen the risk of setting the place on fire. My owners manual is for the Australian market and it states that all of this model have cats, so I'm not so sure its unusual.

My 2003 D2 has a CAT and so did my 2002.
I have the Tombraider ECM upgrade and love it. Have done 14,000kms, mostly towing camper trailer across Australia with no problems. 1/3 throttle acceleration is unbeleivable then put your foot down and feel it surge away some more(and that is with 32" tyres,it would go like a rocket with the original 29" tyres). Fuel consumtion on Hwy is around 1l/100kms better than before the mod. Around town is about the same. Going up hills the auto stays in 4 gear were it use to change back to third. It even changes up to 4 gear while still going up hill while before the mod it would keep revving in 3rd until you were over the top of the hill.

Here is my update on the Tombraider ECU upgrade.

Between Xmas and New Year I loaded up the Disco with fridge, camping gear, 2 mountain bikes and for good measure, a 22kg kayak on the roof. Now this, I thought would up the wind resistance and give me worse than average fuel consumption.

On the way down to Bairnsdale (where I filled up) I recorded 12.5 litre per 100km (mixture of 250km of city driving and 250 highway) OK, not what I would like it to be but better than the previous tankfull at 13.5L per 100km.

Then some more highway work, some light offroad work and the drive home. Filled up in Traralgon and wow, 10.96L per 100km! Best consumption I've had and with a kayak on the roof! I'm wrapped.

    Some other observations:

*The auto kicks down much less with the ECU upgrade - crappy cruise control is a little more bearable now. When she does kick down a gear, it's for a much shorter period and with less surge.

*Overtaking is now fantastic - no more wondering if you are going to make it - sink the right foot and she just goes like a rocket!

*Safeway diesel is very yellow these days - what the hell are they putting in it?

*This trip was done on standard 255/65R16 Michelin XPC - still to try out some low range work with BFG MT 265/75R16

ECU upgrade - best thing that's happened to my vehicle in performance terms (now if only the Td5 were as quiet as the TDV6)!

    Cheers,

Mike my 2002 Extreme came with a CAT but it was only on for a short while. Its still in the shed.
Also had Tombraiders intercooler upgrade which puts more oomph behind the ECU upgrade especially on hills. Never had any overheating even towing a van and certainly surprised a few nissotas.

Did you obtain a pre-cat replacement pipe, or did you just cut out the cat?
