Your grease is 'dry' and your bearings need repacking. At least your axle seals are still good!
As John has mentioned in the D1 driveline thread, what you are looking at is 'fretting' corrosion and means it needs lubing.
I Noticed this the other day when I was adjusting the front passenger side wheel bearings. Can't see any wear on anything !! What does it mean ?
After I cleaned it up, doesn't look like anything is broken !!
Thanks
Matt.

yeah read that.... wasn't sure though, thanks.Originally Posted by up2nogood
The dust is from the splines. You can see a lot of wear on the splines.
There is a definite step there.
Functionally it is probably OK but will probably add to the general clunk level.

I agree with Phillip. It seems a common problem with Defenders and later D1 and RRCs (early D1 and RRC used a one-piece axle with the flange forming a solid part of the axle).
I wonder if it would be better to Loctite the splines as is done with the P38A and D2?

Well just re-packed the bearings, all seem ok, grease was a bit old.
There has been a slight clonk on take-off for quite a while, but only if you put your foot down from take-off. Had suspected the suspension, but all that has been replaced now.
Looking at the photo's and the real thing, I can't tell where it has worn ! what would you have to replace ?? both parts ??

well that is lack of lubrication.
the splines need some sort of lubricant on them to minimise wear.
yours are totally dry and appear to have been assembled dry.
as mentioned there appears to be some wear, but that shouldn't be too much of a worry.
when you put it back together use grease on the splines to lubricate them and all should be ok.
i use an anti sieze lubricant on mine, as it is designed for high load and temperature. such as 'ampol koprcote' [spelling may be incorrect] but any good anti sieze lubricant will do the job
Yep... Caused by the splines being as dry as a snake's @ss in a wheel rut!
When putting it all back together, just smear the splines with any excess grease. Finally, just before you fit the dust cap, stick a 'glob' of grease in.

A good example of fretting corrosion.
This has made me think seriously about greasing the wheel bearings on the Discovery.
Apart from locking tab washers, outer gaskets & grease, & assuming there is nothing wrong inside, is there any other bits I should know about before I tackle it? Things sound fine, but it has been a while since they were done.
Are the locking tabs the same as the Series 2A tabs?
