Hi all has anyone changed the rubber "uni joint" to a real uni joint???? understand that there would be some pro shaft changes but what about rear flange shaft.
Replaced it before we left (Ade) for Fraser Is and pulled a guy out of Indian Head, been bogged for 3hrs, more to follow on this story for L/Rover, anyway, destroyed the block costly $147 to get another on the Island by air Fraser.
Any help appreciated,
TKS Weiry

My rubber was replaced just before I bought the Disco. The previous owner said "it looked like it needed replacing". I love the previous owner of my Disco![]()
when i got rid of that donut on my disco i used the rear prop shaft from a rangie with a lt230 transfer case, they use the same prop shaft. you also need the drive flange from a fine spline rover diff and the spacer to go with it. i used the spacer from a series 111 diff. (the donut type diff flange has the spacer built in) the hardest part is getting the peg out of the original diff flange to remove the flange nut! this way it's all standard parts and is all bolt together!![]()

If you have a normal puller set you'll be able to remove the plug which hides the pinion nut. Grab one of the RAVE CD's from here and have a look at the schematic before you start pulling it to bits.
Other than that I'd recommend putting a new pinion seal on the diff while you're there.
Fairly simple, I just did it to mine, although I forgot to get the spacer out of the diff I took the pinion flange from. Doh!
I had the rear drive shaft and donut replaced on the 98 Disco TDI by Ricks on the Gold Coast early in 2006. Replaced with an earlier model Disco shaft and they also used a metal spacer. We had chewed a number of donuts and as we tow a van decided for the change.
No problems with the new set up. Also had longer grease nipples placed on the shaft for easier servicing.
TKS gents for the info, we headed to Fraser Is before xmas from Ade (6500ks round trip) I've over the years had a few 4x4 of my own and drive a few in the comp I work for. The bus was fantastic on the beach my down fall was to help a gent and family who'd been stuck +trailer @ Indian Head for 3hrs, his son had a 2002 4dr Hilux ute and mate had a Maverick Ute they had no luck pulling him out, I pulled up along side ask him if he'd like some help long story short we had him out in 10mins, just the L/R pulling, waited for him at Champane pools did the same there, but did the rubber block and $147 to get it on the Is but help someone out, did catch up with them all at their campsight and had "many" free beers, amazing that so many people where "stuck" at both blows and the old girl in 1st gear just plodded here way through, even a mate was up to his diffs pull up alongside stopped had a chat went in front a snatched him out, he's now looking at the 130 duel cab ute as his next veh for work.
All in all missus v-happy so thats covered the good will/festive season only down fall did a tyre 500ks away from home, sorry destryed the tyre and caused $1300 damage![]()
to the car, of a well known 4x4 tyre so the manufacture and myself "are talking" but as I can't say nothing nasty on this forum, I'll say nothing to keep the piece
