I have seen quite a few. I have also stopped to jump start a magna, Offered water to a Slowlux, Followed a patrol for the 5 km to the next servo. There have also been several I have stopped for who have said thanks but no thanks. All this over the holiday period.Quote:

On our 2 week trip to Queensland and Fraser Island the D2 td5 did not miss a beat, and in 2008 were planing a trip to Cape York and I have plenty of confidence in the car.
The difference is I bet the Disco's you see on the back of trucks are one's that the owners have not had long and the owners haven't come across this site and are most likely getting their services done at the local BP garage.
I get my services done at Graeme Coopers.
Say I just had a service done today and I am heading off for the Cape or somewere remote in a couple of months I would out of good habit get the car looked over by Coopers the week before I went.
I still won't be put off doing the Cape even though my mechanical knowledge is limited compared to someone of the other guys on this site.
I had the unfortunate experience of a serious breakdown with my Discovery a couple of weeks ago (hydraulic hose crimp failure on the transmission cooler) that required the vehicle to be towed by RAC here in WA. The RAC guy that did the tow commented that out of the last 5 vehicles that he had to tow, 3 of them were Discoveries. Just in case you think that he is biased against LR products that obviously isn't true as he used a Defender as the tow vehicle.Quote:

The question is not about the reliability of the LR, breakdown's happen, but when you saw them driving by tilt tray or not did you wave at them. Disco's are very popular around the Central coast and Lake macquarie areas. Yes you saw a few in tow but how many are on the road in our area? There has to be thousands. Therefore a few getting towed is a very low percentage and nothing to worry about. Usless it's your Land Rover, saying that they could just be transporting the cars, in fact I'll be transporting one in the next week and traversing your area so don't count that as a breakdown and tow home job.

Wife and drove 3,000kms around Vic in our '94 Disco with a blown headgasket which blew before we left. It was pressurising the water jacket, so I just left the cap loose.
Bloody thing showed no sign of getting worse (didn't even use chemiweld on it) until I pulled it off the road for tidy ups after about six months of solid daily driving after getting back home. Synchros were gone in the LT77 from the previous owner, but got no worse and I'm used to driving trucks anyway.....
So if you keep the oil up to them, fix the odd leak and service well they'll last. They're quite well engineered. All the little brackets, mounts, etc all are designed to have the car be pounded to death on crap roads so I'm well impressed with them compared to the other fourby's I've owned. Except for those %$&*ing air flow meters. They suck biiiiig time.
okay some good news between 19th December and 30th December l drove Perth to Melbourne and back to Perth didnt see one LR product broken down on roadside or being towed thats 7500km plus of LR free breakdown distance done over 7 days driving
I agree that to have your car serviced by a good independent Land Rover repairer is very wise, or do it yourself by following the service schedule rigidly and use the LR workshop manual.
Foolishly; I bought an extended warranty for my Disco when I bought the car. I am still fixing all the dodgy repairs done to the engine by so-called Ford technicians, who had to strip the engine when a big end bearing went. Water leaks, oil leaks, loose fasteners, re-using old gaskets; every slack practice imaginable was employed by them. So; encumbered with a warranty I now regretted, I had it serviced by a Land Rover dealer in Perth. They started well, but now that I have done the first service myself, I am discovering all that they could not be bothered to do; nearly dry swivel housings; dangerously worn suspension bushings; old contanimated axle oil that I am sure was not changed when it should have been etc. They were happy to charge me hundreds of dollars for servicing and list a great list of faults, none of which they attempted to fix; even little jobs like adjusting the handbrake, which took me three minutes last weekend, they dutifully reported but refused to attend to.
I guess they wanted more money!
