Lucas at it is Series 3

Driving along in Series 3 today and noticed that Temp and Fuel Gauge were heading down the scale.
Temperature went down to bottom of gauge and fuel gauge went down to half way (even though tank was full) Stopped turned it off and all was well and it hasn’t happened since.
I know some of you older guys have probably seen this I suspect the voltage stabilizer for the instruments??

    Any suggestions

It could be the voltage stabiliser, or its earth, or any of the connections leading to it, but it sounds to me more likely to be the earth on the instrument cluster itself. It is certainly something that involves both gauges, so that leaves only the instrument cluster earth, the stabiliser or the connections between these. A test that usually reveals a faulty earth on the instrument cluster is a change of reading when the instrument lights are switched on and off. Another possibility is the ignition switch.

Thanks John I hoped you would answer I pulled out the instrument panel and the earth thumb screw on the RHS instrument was loose so I have tightened it everything looks ok but I noted that the gauges were still moving slightly when you turn the instrument lights on.
I will see how it goes I just hate putting those speedo cables back on

At least the Series 3 is clip on - the Series 1/2 screws on with umpteen turns!
