I have one in my Rangie and like it alot, a TD5 would be quicker, but this thing can idle up most hills. Goes just as good as my Holden 336 stroker motor did in my rangie. I run a turbo700 behind it which makes it nicer to drive. Great low down torque. The best way to do it i think would be to buy a good low k (50,000)runner thats been dynoed, and stick it in. Conversion is farely easy (its just a chev V8) you just need room to put things like the oil cooler like Mick said, it all fit in his pretty good i thought.

Matt (Rovercare) had one in his Rangie and pretty sure he still has the conversion for it which could be used in the defender.

I'm sorry but I wouldn't be using a Td5 to tow a heavy load. I have come to the conclusion that if you stress them at all they suffer from cracked heads, and that gets expensive.

You Know anyone at Brunswick Andrew as I have had problems with a Sue Jones there just trying to get a quote...She ended up being quite nasty and quoting me$19500 which is double the price I can get one from over east (LINQUIP near Gympie)..I will crate one over I think, for $20k I can buy the Izuzu county, and fit mine with the big Chev V* Diesel and lockers
Hey Rich (KIE4)if your reading this are you up for a BIG job
As for the rest of you I don't want to update I love my 98 Fender and she is a keeper
And after I have it fitted I'm Not going to put the "6.5 Chev Diesel " stickers on the side, and have more fun with Tojo drivers...lol

Brings these motors in from the states new at around $15,000 I think he said. It was a couple years ago I spoke with him though.

    Nice bloke.

    Chev V8 Diesels

I have had a 6.2 that I fitted to a 1984 Rangie. I used the original TF727 auto the LT230 T/Case (1.001:1). I ran this configuration for a while and then changed to a Turbo700 4 speed which has a 3.06:1 first gear ratio and a .7 overdrive with a lock up torque conv (modified to lockup in 2nd, 3rd and 4th) and at the same time I fitted a disco T/Case with the 1.2:1 ratio. The result was a stump puller that got off the line real quick and sat on 2000 RPM for 100kph. I used to tow a three tonne boat at 110K's up and down hills all day long with no stress and could get 20MPG with the boat on the back and about 25 without. With this set up I never used low range for the wheeling that I did and that included towing on Fraser, but the rock crawlers may like the torque in low range.
They can easily be tweaked if you use an injector pump rebuilt to 4911 spec's and change the injectors to the 6.5 turbo (hi-pop) ones. For the ultimate beast build up, look around for a -599 block as they are the strongest made and use the 18.5:1 Comp ratio Mahle pistons and then go forced induction.
Do I like 'em, no I love 'em. The only problem was trying to keep it cool. Use a mechanical fan (like the HF9003 Repco?) and use a 'really good' oil cooler. A single 3" mandrel bent works well and sounds bl**dy great.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi Nigel
I spoke to the people in Bunbury where Baz got his 80Ser,they left the jack and towhitch out,I picked them up for him. They are ajents for Brunswicks and send plenty of tojos/****ans over for conversions on consignment or sort of.Thay had a 99 Disco1 auto at the time with a brand new conversion,VERY TIDY,LOOKED FACTORY!!!.They gave me poo about having a Disco, tradi it in on a converted 80SER they say.AND $22G min to convert mine via Brunswicks

I do believe that Brunswicks get a plethora of complaints..I will be doing mine with the help and guidence from Kev at Rovertech as he has done them before and recommends them with the 6.5 Be a while before it all happens..after I get all the donk and the adaptors new radiator etc all sitting there before its changed over will be a big tease.. but I will have an extremely well lokked after 300TDi motor for sale....

find and drive a V8 powered unit (prefer fender buit anything rover) and then come over to Vic and drive my fender with a HS2.8
I'll guarantee you wont want to be carring the weight of that big **** heavy V8 for the little to no extra power-weight it'll give you and the HS2.8 will fit easily and look std under the hood (not to mention use less fuel)

sorry 6.5 rangie I wasn't having a go just my opinion

    yes I have driven one (a V8d)
although I'll admit it was a couple of years ago (so memory may be faded) and non turbo one (chev V8 diesel) in a 110 county (a turbo one may be better)
the owner didn't like it (too much fuel and too heavy on the front end) so I may have been a bit negative due to his feedback to start with

yes I'll admit it was way better (more powerful) than my at the time std 300tdi but the HS2.8 is in a whole other feild (for the size, weight and fuel it uses)

yes a little 9 ltr cummins and 9 speed raod ranger would be nice but way out of this black ducks price range both to buy it and then the engineering required to fit.

I challange any tdi defender driver to drive a HS2.8 and not get out grinning from ear to ear and wondering how they'll finance a new engine
    Jase

    PS
I know I may sound biased casue I do sell the 2.8 (that's no plug) but I can honestly say I make about $200 bucks for each engine I sell and for that I tie up 10 grand for 6 mths (yes it'd be better off in the bank)

I have already made the desison I will not be importing any more engines so once the one in my shed is gone that's it for me (unless I get a contract to sell 500 to the army )
I only ever got into importing them cause i wanted one for myself and through my dealings was offered the "distributorship" then one I had driven one was so impressed that I thought it was too good not to share
Even though I wont be importing them I can put anyone who is interested onto a guy in Qld who is already an offical agent (he's never brought in a HS2.8 he only brings in the big industrial stuff) but he will bring one in if someone wants one
FYI the HS2.8 is in it's last 12 mths of production (ford will stop using it at the end of the year due to tightning emmissions regs so it'll slowly die off as a "new engine" and be replaced by a 3 ltr electronic version that wont bolt straight into a LR as it's a differant block
(in case your scared don't panic the factory have to provide a FULL range of spare parts for 15yrs as part of thier contract to ford)

    J
