Well i'm quite happy with my chev (when it stays cool), yes they are a sleepy motor (i plan to put my turbo on oneday) but atleast it sounds cool .
Now i haven't driven a HS2.8 but i plan to next time i'm in Kilmore Am interested to see how these little donks go, we could have a drag!

Mother in law has had her 300TDi rebuilt, bigger exhaust, turbo boost turned up, injecter pump mods, dynoed at AXT turbo. It goes better but nothing to write home about (58hp at the wheels(could be kw)). I think i just like a few more cubic inches, oh and a V8 note

They're not the fastest thing on the planet but they do sound great with a 3" exhaust. Great motor.

When I first got the Defender I swore I wouldn't go back to a 4 or 6 cylinder anything, ever again..................I still haven't.........I've got two V8's and a 3 cylinder!
    Cheers

Talking 6.5l chev diesel in a defender

Coming in late here but if you are still chasing info.....I have a 2001 110/defender/extreme with a 6.5L chevy diesel fitted by brunswick diesels in WA.Spectacular performance off road, different class altogether to the td5.I tow a 30ft fibreglass boat, guessing 3t, no problem, hardly know it's there.
Costs though and be prepared for some issues.
Overheating-still being sorted after 18 mnths but just about there.
Had to change tfr box over as was revving at about 3000rpm at highway speeds after conversion/it's either that or high speed diffs.
    Gearbox now needs a rebuild-115k total/35k after the 6.5 went in...not happy.
Cost is out to about $25/$27k with the box rebuild.
    But I love it......

I know about the 6.5's and their O heating the 6.7 doesnt suffer that I have been told and the R380 box isnt suitable for the Chev as you have found out the hard way.....I wouldnt use Brunswicks if I won lotto..The ****** there Sue was arrogant and rude when i was enquiring I suggested that to have that attitude and little knowledge base and still have a job she must be phuking the boss..
I can get a 6.7lt to my front door in a crate for $12000..even with the extras it still dont get near the $21000 I was quoted.. Brunswick can go **** em selves..but thanks for the suggestion.

G'day Jeff-yep that was me in Cowarumup, we live in Busselton.
She's looking pretty good now, just about to put some 285/75 16 tyres on, varying opinions on suitability/legality of this but can be done on std 7"rims.
Re the power comments...on the highway it's nothing special/winds up slowly etc but still far quicker than td5/but sluggish compared to say a petrol v8cruiser which my mate has....off road, in the most difficult situation you like to think of...it shines/makes the cruiser look silly.Incredible torque and very forgiving for those times you stuff it up and find yourself in the wrong gear, and needing to go down one....with the 6.5 you don't need to go down one, it's just keeps turning over when you swear it has every right to stall.....
Brunswick diesels-18mnths on I'm still making my mind up...they havn't shirked the issue on sorting the overheating and have spent a lot of time and cash(theirs)on my 110...totally committed to sorting it...but, they are in the business of selling these things so if anyone is giving it serious thought, talk to me.
My 110 now owes me about $80k and I still love it...bit concerning really...
I'd do it all again-6.5 chevy in a defender with trc is too good not too.
