V8 Diesels Who's got em and what they like

I need to tow a 18' Caravan and I'm thinking of putting a new V8 diesel in my Defender..but before I do I would like to hear from those of you who have HAD or HAVE a 6.5 lt Chev diesel.
    What they like etc etc
    TIA

I'd rather try and fit one of these http://www.cummins.com/na/pages/en/p...urbodiesel.cfm rather than a Chev.
Better power/torque than a Duramax or a Powerstroke, and very easy to tweak.

Now as to whether you could shoehorn in the big straight six...........

I don't know about economy but they pull like a train...

With that lump under the hood, you probably wouldn't even notice an 18' caravan on the back.

How much money have you got?

Personally I think they are a great motor. I'm no diesel expert and I haven't spent years driving all sorts of different diesel engines for work etc so my opinion is based on only ever having owned 3 diesels. The 6.5 being one of them.

In the Defender......It will fit in but there will be issues. Because the engine bay is so small it is a tight fit. But it does fit. The issues are things like where to put the engine oil cooler and how big a radiator can you shoehorn in. Airconditioning too? It starts to get very tight in that small engine bay. You'll have to fit in some really good thermo fans too.

The gearbox may reject the motor too. I was told that the later R380 was stronger than the earlier ones, mine was a 95. Bearings just aren't up to it. Gearing is a thing to look at too. It'll want to drive everywhere in 5th (probably also contributing to premature gearbox failure) I swapped transfer case with one out of my 3 speed TF727 Rangie. It was perfect after that. Will sit on 90 in fourth with some in reserve and fifth is just idleing along at 110 kmh.

They are a good motor. I wish I didn't have to sell mine, but these things happen. I would have liked to sort out the problems with it. The sound of the V8 diesel is great. If you do it you'll love it.

Another option is to fit an Isuzu 4BD1T and gas top it ( lpg ) run a ZF auto behind it and you will have a very strong and reliable towing power train. You can still run air con & all other ancilleries and have no adaptor problems as you would with a Chev.

    Just a thought

Save up for the new Fender, see if thats up to the job!!!!
Its going to cost you 15 to 20Gs to do the Chevy V8 PROPERLY.Brunswick diesels are the go.
Then you have the gearbox thats not up to it.Auto is the go.

It's funny how 6.5 litres doesn't sound so much...but when you say 390 cubic inches, well, far out!!!!!!!!!!

Could pull down houses with that much torque!

We have the F250s at work. 7.3L intercooled turbo diesels. That sort of power will toss your 18ft van around like a 5x3 box trailer behind your Tdi. Plus I bet your Defender doesn't weigh 3.3t standard like our F250s do.
I just hope the Chev 6.5L motors are more reliable.

However given engine conversion costs surely you would be better off updating to a second hand Td5 Defender. No doubt not as powerful but probably much less headache and cheaper in the long run and would still tow your van.
