    Hot TD5 handbrake?

I have noticed on longer journey's - say 4 hours without a stop, that the handbrake gets hot on my 1999 defender 110 xtreme. Is this usual, or has anyone else experienced this?

I am hoping it is not suggestive of something serious. Car performs as new in all respects, and is regularly serviced an maintained by myself,

If its the same as in the Disco (and I expect it is), then its probably full of dirt/dust. There are 2 holes in the backing plate that allow dirt to get in - 1 facing towards the front of the vehicle (with a spring hooked into it) and the other on the lip at the top. The holes on mine are now blocked using silicone.

Thanks Graeme, and sorry for a dumb question, but how would that make the handbrake hot? The plastic handle is okay, but the metal shaft gets too hot to rest a bare leg on if you are wearing shorts. I thought the heat was transmitted somehow? I suppose a blockage would prevent heat loss? confused....

Only time my handbrake gets hot is when I want a new 'add on' to the TD5 and she finds out the cost.

mine gets warm, to exactly the same temp as the transfer case.

I checked it with my handy dandy multi meter that has an external thermal couple... now i use it as an indication as to how the vehicles going...

so long as im comfortable with my leg on it alls well... when it starts to get hot I just back it down to about 80kph for half an hour or so...

Dave - thanks - great advice. Thinking about it, it has really only got that hot when I have been gunning it - I usually never drive anywhere over 100, but on my recent flinders trip on the way back I was pretty much between 110 and 120 all the way back.

Thanks Dave - the car was also full with 6 children and two adults, with camping gear and esky, so was much more heavily laden than usual - the last time it happened we were on a three week trip fully laden also, so the car would obvioulsy need to work harder. Probably a lesson not to travel over 90 when fully laded (my usual speed anyway).

    thanks for the assistance.

Sorry Martin, I understood that the handbrake drum was getting excessively hot.
