    drop/scissor/revolver shackles

i have been toying with the idea of getting something like these for a bit of extra suspension travel. Obviously new shockers and brake hoses will be required, and i guess the uj and driveshaft wont be happy at times but is there any danger in using these.
I like the revovler shackles myself, because they take the sideways flex out of the spring; however will that allow my axle to slide into the inside of my guard? I havent found much negative writing about them, but i also havent seen any around. i was wondering if anyones had any experience with them. they sound to good to be true.

no, they wont the axis of freedom they provide is wrong for that...

what they do is help relieve the twist in the spring from one side drooping beyond its normal amount the spring is still located latterally it just gets a bit more flex from not being quite so rigidly held...

However what they dont tell you is that this places extra stress on the eye that is not fitted with the swivel. on a good spring its much of a muchness and the bush takes care of most of it... but if the bush is dodgy or the spring is not happy they can crack.

I'd love to put these on, but at the $$$$ they cost it aint gunna happen.

please keep us posted if you fit them, updates are good.

First of all, they are illegal on-road AFAIK.

2nd, I don't think they provide much assistance overall - my springs seem to have no problems twisting - but others seem to have good results with them - e.g. RPR who posts on some of the US and UK forums.

3rdly - unless they are the type that locks in place for downhill descents, they can be somewhat dangerous - if the rears unload (open up) when going down a steep hill.

I am happy with my wheel travel - just from modded springs and shocks, no drop shackles!!!

sorry i kinda disappeared there for a few days, had to work, was a groomsman at wedding... its been a bit crazy. so i'll thank you all for you help, and i might cover a few things u all brought up in one post.

im glad to hear that none knows of any good reason not to put them on; except for the downhill comment which is fair, however i think it will be ok even if they dont lock becasue they cant lock open, and the only reason they would open really far is in a case where a normal suspension would get airborne. correct me if i'm wrong. i had a set of srpings that always inverted over bumps and downhill. that was annoying, and they didnt last long... but that was only a huge annoyance because u needed a crowbar to get em back.

as for expense, i think i could get them for about 500 dollars from the us. i find that a small price to pay for such a large gain in susp[ension travel.

once agin thanks for your help; i will let u know if i get hem and how they go.

The gains may not be anywhere as large as you think. And unloading of the rear suspension on steep downhills or sideslopes will not necessarily occur only when the wheels will be lifting off the ground!!!

So a search in the gen 4x4 tech section of outerlimits - there are plenty of people who fitted them and then later removed them due to adverse handling and little noticeable performance increase offroad.
