I'd look at rebuilding the box, should be the cheapest and easiest option.
doing a gearbox / engine conversion is a lot of work, unless you love the series..... would be cheaper to just buy a county.
hi everyone..bought my first landy-series 3 109 with a red motor 202 conversion last year.it was very untidy though solid (make sense?)good chassis, firewall etc..i have limited $$ and basic skills/tools and finally got rego last week.
had to take it out,bit of sand, front wheels sink, select reverse to try an easy reverse out and BANG!!....gear lever still in reverse but theres a horrible grinding sound.
these things happen etc....but is this normal??
all oils etc were changed pre rego though its pretty hard to get the drivetrain up to temp in a suburban backyard and a drive around the block unreg in my area is not possible.
question 1.
how pricey are the internals, are they even available?
question 2.
the 202 seemed a good idea at the time but it may limit my gearbox replacement options(i cant see the 4 spd lasting if thats the norm)
question 3.long term is a 3.5 plus drivetrain out of a rangie the way to go?
i have a mate who keeps telling me that he would put a big block in it and make it two wheel drive....it would then apparently never need 4wd.
you can see why i need the right advice
i guess i really want to keep it as simple as possible
thanks in advance for any thoughts
seriesly....

Hi
Whoever said
"i have a mate who keeps telling me that he would put a big block in it and make it two wheel drive....it would then apparently never need 4wd."
..............doesn't know anything about 4wd's - or in fact how a drive train in a vehicle works, 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive
As said above I'd look at the re-build option - got to be the easiest and less expensive.
Rebuild, or maybe a series 2 or 2a box without the synchros on the first 2 gears. It is reputed to be much stronger. That said i've got a series 3 with a 173 and haven't had any gearbox problems, although i've only had it on sand a couple of times.

G'day Seriesly![]()
Sounds like the previous owner was aware of G/box problems, It is a simple box to repair, could be one of 2 common things, reverse idler gear, or mainshaft, the series 3 had the gears as part of the mainshaft, the 2/2a were seperate gears, what state are you in, as it may be worth just getting a replacement S/hand gearbox/transfer complete, but before you go pulling it apart just check that it has not jumped out of High/low rangeone of my parking tricks is to slip the transfer lever into neutral
no drive no way, stops the schoolies going for a burn

No.
Second hand complete Series gearboxes are still available pretty cheap or for specific parts try these people - http://www.fwd.com.au/question 1.

I'm no series expert but I believe loads of Series had the 202 conversion done without gearbox issues. Others may correct me on this.question 2.
the 202 seemed a good idea at the time but it may limit my gearbox replacement options(i cant see the 4 spd lasting if thats the norm)
That depends what you want to end up with.question 3.long term is a 3.5 plus drivetrain out of a rangie the way to go?
As said before your mate doesn't sound like he has a clue. Tell him you've decided to go rocket-assisted instead.i have a mate who keeps telling me that he would put a big block in it and make it two wheel drive....it would then apparently never need 4wd.
You've come to the right place. There are quite a few Series gurus around here. Ask and you will be answered.you can see why i need the right advice
i guess i really want to keep it as simple as possible
thanks in advance for any thoughts

thanks for the advice..much appreciated.
i will have a go at the gearbox..for all i know it has had a hard life etc..
i have found it hard to pick a bad noise from a normal landy noise,
i have a haines manual that seems pretty detailed...what im not too confident on is being able to pick a dodgy syncro or spring.
i have found it so far to be pretty simple to work on..not counting the welded crossmember and one piece gearbox/transfer
did i mention it still had all four forward gears and got me home ok..cant complain about that.
problem for me to buy a second hand one is it will be a lucky dip on the condition.better the devil i have so to speak
previous owner bought it for a trip to fraser island and apparently it didnt keep up with the patrols and tojos...but he must have tried, right??
the series is going to my 18 yr old daughter and just has to be reliable..
it already has the safety and speed limiting taken care of![]()
is there a place that stocks gaskits, bearings, syncros around sydney at all?
thanks,seriesly
series gearboxes parts are cheap enough all of them are still available
i swear by four wheel drives down in melbourne pm me for thier number and their website also has the series parts cat available as a trial download...
If you know a spanner from a monkey wrench theres nothing too tricky in a series box..
when I come through sydney on the way up i can drop you off a copy of the workshop manual for your vechilce If you swear on a stack of landy parts That you'll mail it back... copy it first if you want to..
theres a few guys who could help you out on this front in sydney as well, give it time and they will show up

Before you pull the box out
FIRST CHECK THE FOLLOWING
Did the transfercase jump out of gear - BANG!! (put it back in gear - FREE)
Did you break an axle - BANG!! (unlikely is SIII)
Did you strip the splines on the rear axle hub - BANG!! (weakest point of SIII transmission - $20 part, 20min job)
All these will also cause a bang, but are much cheaper to repair. Being the eternal optimist, I hope your transfercase jumped out of gear.
