    snorkel thread again - defender

Sorry for starting anotehr thread on this topic but I can't find the last one.

My question is, is there really any difference between Safari, airtec or airflow snorkels except price??

It seems to me that they all do the same thing, and all are made of the same materials, but Airflow is a lot cheaper than the other two.

Feel free to prove me wrong or enlighten me. I'd love to know if anyone has actually had problems with the airflow, or if people just have an allegence to safari.

I need to invest so some serious examples would be great help.

    thanks heaps all

From memory there was concerns about the fit and finish of the airtec, as well as longevity. However as always there are people who are on both sides of the argument. My advice is to look at both in the flesh and go from there.

I have an Airtec on my Defender, the ram size (diameter) is not the same as the Safari and is actually non-standard so fitting a precleaner isn't as easy.

The Airtec came with the vehicle otherwise I would have fitted a Safari.

    Airflow

Just fitted an airflow from 4wdsystems in Adelaide (post in projects section) So can't comment longterm but I like the fact that under the bonnet it doesnt use flexible hose which on several second hand vehicles I have looked at has broken down. Can't say I have seen a snorkel body that has broken down and we live in a hot area that gets sun most days of the year! (except over the weekend when we recieved flooding!)

Mine cost $299 plus freight from Adelaide

When I was investigating them, the Safari looked better and neater in the finish.

As mentioned the airtec has a unique diameter, but the Safari for the 300Tdi (& TD5) is wider than the 200Tdi one and you'll also have trouble getting a precleaner to suit that, unless you want to buy a 12" diameter precleaner which is pretty big & ugly. However on last years Simpson trip, the droopie (Finer Filter) snorkel socks picked up more dust than the precleaners, so that's another option to varying precleaner sizes.

As no-one seems to have any real issues with either brand, and it seems that most do exactly the same thing, I can't work out why most people go for the safari i.e. the most expensive, when the airflow is abotu $200kegs cheaper??

    just throwing it out there

    probably consumer confidence

the one who can afford the most advertising is obviously the best aren't they????????????

thats why most kids want nike not Big W own brand....

the only thing for me when searching for a snorkel for my disco, as i to looked at air flow and i too asked the question you have just asked on here...is to look at them as i saw one on a different make of car, i thought that they just looked badly finished, it was also the shape as the angles on the snorkel looked like they very harsh

don't know how i'm gunna explain this....but rather than the snorkel looking like it had a curve in it you know as it bends to follow the shape of the car it looked like it had been creased more than curved.......i don't know whether that would cause any disturbance in airflow through the snorkel or not as the air would be running more over a corner than a smooth curve..............

does that make sense ....probably not

remember though i wasn't looking at one on a landrover......but my first reaction was the build quality but you get what you pay for i suppose and if it does the job and you don't care about looks and would rather save your money i would say thats probably the go

the unit that 4wd Systems sells (Airflow ??) appear to use a much smaller diameter tube/internal volume than a Safari which could really restrict performance.
I wouldn't use one because of this.
