The rear locker is definitely worthwhile for soft sand. But If you're buying off the showroom floor or second hand, you'll be lucky. Most of the ones with the rear active diff are orders, so from new you're looking at a five month wait. I waited and it was worth it!
Also get the active cornering headlights if you can. They're not just a gimmick.

If the budget will extend to Premium SatNav, get it. The SatNav is a godsend when navigating unknown streets with SWMBO. No more arguments. With Premium you get the 4x4 info screen which is an excellent tool when on the soft stuff.
It all depends if you are buying new or second hand; and if new, whether you are prepared to wait.
Very few cars have come to Aust with the Active Rear Diff; and the dealer pre-orders that you can buy off the showroom floor are almost definitely not going to have it. To option the car up to your liking, your looking at a five month wait.

and still waiting, had hoped to have this all sorted by last week but lease company not able to list all the options correctly on the contract so now the dealer has to type it all out for them with option, part # price, put it on a quote with a quote # so the lease co can refer to the Q#Quote:

I can't comment first hand as I've got a D2 not a D3, but I have heard several grumbles from caravan owners that the tow hitch on the D3 is too low. It is worse for those who have the higher ground clearance off road caravans and camper trailers as the low tow ball location means that they can't get their trailer/caravan tow bar horizontal. Towing stability is then affected. From what I gather the after market tow hitches have to protrude too far from the rear of the hitch receiver before they can raise the tow ball position and this then affects the rating for the tow ball load.
Check it out if you intend to do any serious towing.

probably easier to modify the caravan hitch to make it 4" or so lower. We don't yet have a van but we most definitely have it on the list for the next 2 years so will look into any height problems then. Thank you letting me know though.Quote:

We have the old Surf in the mechanics workshop at the moment getting it roadworthy to get rid of it. New ball joints, steering control arm (safety recall), trailing arm link (just hanging on), rear shocks, timing belt, tappets re-shimmed, air con comp bearing, and fix gear box leak, wheel alingment and 2 new tyes on the front. Whew! Should get it back next week.

I ordered my D3 SE TDV6 in July and it was delivered at the end of 2006. I did not order as much fruit as you - just rear diff lock, rear A/C and side protection bars... so I would expect 3 months is optimistic.
I have now done over 9100 km in 2 months - mostly on highway trips to Queensland and Melbourne. I had a short offroad play - and the terrain response is so good, it almost took all the fun out of it!

we took delivery of our D3 TDV6 on Friday, very nice too.
Few little problems. The DVD installer did a lousy job on the suround that fits up to the roof and broke the catches on the little panels near your feet as well when they did the interfacing to the Hi-ICE system so it has to go back to have that fixed, slight pull to the left as well when driving, guess alignment is slightly off.
It does seem very flat in response down low once you have slowed then go to take off again? Is this normal or is it in "running in" mode with the ECU?
Other problem is that I can not find where the trailer socket is. Nothing in the book to advise either. Surely it comes with one?
Anyone know?
oh and the cultered English voice in the SAT NAV system seems to have trouble understanding me in speech recognition mode. Keep getting "sorry" " That command is not recognised" etc.
Fuel economy is excellent, averaging about 35 MPG or 9.9 L/100km at the moment. That is a mix of highway and city driving though we are not pushing it hard. 110 max on the highway.
