V8 rebuild. your opinions

IMHO, The engineer answered the question that you asked.ie
"how do I get more performance"
The answer he gave is quite a standard one, heads, cam carburation.
He\also assumed you needed a rebuild.
If your engine does not burn oil or make noises, then it probably does not require a rbuild at that lowmileage.
( who bludy set this post to replace characters???)
It may bethat your cam is worn from poor history of oil changes. In this caseyou will almost certainly need new rockers and shafts, as the swarf from the cam ruins the bushes.
If the engine is checked and found to be OK, the only REAL way to get better hill climbing ability is to increases torque around 2000RPM. while you may get a bit more from a towing cam, in general engine capacity is what gives torque.
So whatever you do toa 3.5 it will still not climbhills realy well in top gear.
A short 4.6 would probably answer all your problems without recourse to hand built heads, hot cams etc, and with a low compression to use cheaper fuel.

thanks for the replies. i was really asking on your opinions on what the guy wrote about a rebuild and if his views were reasonable or he was going overboard which would result in additional work having to be paid for. my current set up runs ok, though it uses/looses a little oil albeit only a tiny amount.coolant levels are steady with the gauge sitting a ball hair under half at most times. i had thought wether it would be more economical to have a 3.9 installed in standard tune, as it would still produce more bhp/torque than the re-worked 3.5.

Cause they catch fire easy and do lotsa damage ive seen 2 rangies burnt to the ground
Cause The airfilters caught fire with a backfire

Wouldnot have happened with std filter set up tho

i too have seen lots of cars on fire, would not have happened if..., some idiot hadn't of poured petrol over it and ignited it....,hadn't of driven it into another vehicle at over 70mph...., had removed the blanket he placed over the engine 'cos it was freezing cold at the time.............. the list goes on.

I agree with all the comments regarding rebuilds as per your mech, but I would also add that if your mtr is using little oil, has no coolant loss, and is just feeling tired, I would lookat fitting a decent camshaft and followers, some HIF Su's from a P6B, with the appropriate needle profiles, and subject to the fuel available, run heaps of spark advance. I recently re needled a low compression (8.13)3.9 V8 County that had had a new disco short mtr fitted and already had the HIF SU carbs and found a huge increase in go and a lack of detonation and overheating on our standard ULP, 91RON here in Tasmania.( Which for you sporren wearers is a long way away from 5 star gasoline...)I think that if your compresssions are even, then knowing the good old 3.5 I would stick a cam in it and keep on keeping on.

its done very few miles--

aparently the 3.5s wear cam lobes, you can easily check this though,(see website below)
the engineers response is OK,, you may need to do all of those things,,,,, but its done so few miles get the tune checked out first.
the 3.9s came out with the cam profile the 3.5 SHOULD have had,, and is an interestion changover(cheap) option.

dont forget,, max torque is at 2600, and max power is a lot more again, dont be scared to give it a rev.
