    Question Crank shaft problems 200tdi

    Hi,
I noticed a slight knocking noise from the front of the Defender on Friday and I could not work out where it was coming from until I started to loose power steering and the charge light was flickering.

To cut a long story short it appears that the woodruf key that locates the harmonic balancer gave away which inturn chewed the crap out of the bore of balancer , scored the crank shaft , damaged the woodruf slot in the shaft and smashed the wood ruf key to pieces .

I also noticed some damage further back behind the balancer so I pulled the timing belt cover of and the the woodruf key that locates the timing gear of the shaft is damaged. With slight damage to the timing gear.

    Now for the questions:
Has this happened to anyone else and how did you fix it ???

Can the crank shaft be replaced without dropping the engine ???.

Is it possible to have my shaft repaired ???.

Could I broach a square key into the shaft and what depth could I / should I go to ???

Does any one out there have a crank shaft and timing gear that they want to get rid of ??

At least the Series Three is running like a dream.

    Cheers,

    Lucas

This is not an uncommon problem. I've seen several to which this has happened.

I don't know what the mechanics did to fix it. I could ask on Monday.

Depending on the damage, Crankshaft Rebuilders should be able to repair the crank, they have welded up and reground a crank for my dads 1927 dodge 4ltr 4 cylinder motor as well as the work they do for some V8 supercar teams.

As said before, all too common I'm afraid.
I have 2 recoed cranks sitting around in anticipation of the next one...Unfortunately none are 200Tdi.

I had our local machinist and hardchromer repair them and cut new keyways, a fantastic result and not too many$$$ when you consider the amount of work involved.

Try a few Landy wreckers for engine parts, I would give John at All4x4 a call, they are system sponsors also I believe and are in Newcastle. (02) 4957 1117
Sorry to hear about your dramas.

Yes, BUT, as the crankshaft is attached to the Gearbox via the Flywheel, Clutch and Pressure plate you will have to remove these to do so, and that is more work than actually pulling the motor, Regards Frank.

    Yup, happened to me.

The crank was repaired by filling in the missing bit with weld. The mechanic wouldn't guarantee the repair but it was still ok when I sold the vehicle 3 years later.

Thanks for the feed back guys,
Its of to the shed with spanners in hand, I will remove the engine as I have already removed the radiator and grill etc. to get the timing cover off.

Looking at the puncture seal on the timing cover it would appear that the woodruf kicked up on installation when the timing belt was replaced by the previous owner, it has since done 20000 k's.

I will replace the belt while I am delving around in there, considering the belt and tensioner were replaced 20k ago, who many k's should one get out of the tensioner??

Any other pointers around the timing side of things.

    Cheers,

    Lucas

My tension rollers were still ok at 275,000 k's but I changed them anyway. Spin both rollers by hand and check for roughness when you get the belt off though they should be ok having done only 20k
