New shocks and springs for a '93 Disco

    Hi All,

My '93 Disco' has now done over 250K's and I'm thinking ( I actually know for sure!), that it's time to replace shocks and springs. Sick of leaning to the right as well as finding that when braking, the tyres would lock and skip rather than press into the road and stop the car.

Got a quote from Pedders (their brand), for $750 installed or Kings for $850 installed.

Most of my driving is solo, but weekends I am towing a 2 tonne boat.

I don't want to go too hard but suggestions from what others are using would be appreciated.
    TIA.

    Cheers, Peter

If you don’t want to go to hard maybe a medium spring rate with polyair bags in the rear to take the extra weight when the boat is hooked up.
Out of those two choices I would go the Kings.
Get a price from TJM and ARB or a local custom 4x4 shop.
Even if you don't like there prices you can find out interesting facts about different set ups.

I went with OME and a have found the set up is a good compromise on road and off road.

Bilstein shocks if you can afford them. Most on here would recommend them.
I have the TJM kit in right now but will be repalcing it with Billies and Les Richmond springs when the budget allows it.
The advantage of talking to outfits like Les Richmond (or Graeme Cooper in Sydney ) is they they know Land Rover suspensions very well.

Hi Pedro, did that price include the springs and if so what are the actual part no's, etc required?

LD & Wayne, I like the idea of both of your suggestions, having looked at the workshop manual, replacing the fronts seems to be the harder of the sets to do although it only shows a 3 out of 5 in the difficulty rating and I've done harder jobs. I imagine that there would be a fair amount of labour costs in the prices I was given?

Take a peek at EFS... Excellent quality product.

And give Peddlers a miss... That stuff is rubbish. Even their road car gear is junk.

I personally like LRA springs, plenty of rates, lengths and options. Not cheap, but if you don't like the combo within 30 days (or something like that) just return them afor postage cost and get a diferent rate to your liking . Graeme Cooper has the same sort of range and they're about $40 or so a pair cheaper (that's where I bought mine).

I currently have (87 Rangie hi-line) 180 front, 220 rear which carries a decent load before the **** end starts to sag. I don't tow so I have no use for anything heavier. I also have a long range tank fitted and the rear doesn't sag with a decent load.

Shocks, Koni's for me. Still a bit stiff even on the softest setting.

    Hi
I have a 50mm EFS complete setup with rear polyairs on my disco2.They settled to around 40mm,dont they all?
Would think they would work very well on a D1,I could have gone softer springs with mine as I have ACE fitted.
Got a good deal from www.4wddirect.com.au the price saved on the kit more than paid for the rear polyairs I got from them.Get a RTC steering damper off them too,the whole lot cost me around $1200 delivered to my door.
Changing the whole lot at once makes a huge difference to handling.

Thanks for the heads up on the Pedders gear Tombraider, I'd take you up on the offer of assistance but I'm on the central coast of NSW so a bit too far...

I am going to check out the EFS gear though, tried going through the 4wd direct site, but it's a bit of a dogs breakfast and not exactly shopping cart friendly so instead I have sent them off an email request for a quote on replacement parts to suit. Will see what they say.

Hi Trav, good to hear from you too. I'll scope out the Koni's and the LRA's and see what the damage is going to be there.

Either way I have decided to do the job myself, always have been a glutton for punishment! ( as well as saving a couple of hundred no doubt!)

    Pete'
