If you want to do a conversion, buy an older defender to do it to, and go from there. However if you have the TD5, i'd chip it an intercool it. yes some TD5's seem to have issues, frenchies has been somewhat of a horror story I must say, but others have had no problems.

its not that i dont like the motor I LOVE it ! its got oodles of power and torque and great economy but after reading some of the storys on hear i relised the amount of time i spend up woop woop its could jst stop on me and then i would be kindda Fuked but when i bought it didnt wanna get the head gasket blowing, timing belt breaking, argumentive transfer case of the 300TDi. a mate of mine bought a 300Tdi about 6 months before i got my Td5 and he had all these troubles with his and he couldnt keep it on the road. so then i changed my ideas and decided to buy a Td5 cause originaly i was gonna buy a 300Tdi

I share your concern. I was worried about reliability on our trip to Broome a couple of years ago. We had no problems.

Nothing is certain in life so I would make sure that you have good breakdown cover, take some spare parts, have a plan B should anything go kaput, and enjoy the trips in one of the nicest vehicles on the road.

why do people think that they are capable of buying a bullet proof indestructible never go wrong vehicle when they are simply not made by any manufacturer.

any motoring forum l have ever been on has had tales of woe from people about all sorts of vehicles by all the manufacturers and always include tales of incompetence about servcie dealers and warranty issues.

even horses gave trouble to their owners but at least you had the satisfaction of being able to apply the 303 fix to a horse

Do we have more details on this as was considering one of these for my 97 Disco.

    May be better than updating.

Is the Td5 really that bad as from the other side of the fence they look good, real good.

There are more Td5's on the road that have no problems than those that do.

I have not asked the question here as yet but I will now. Have those Td5's that have problems been chipped, driven hard, been neglected? They are a 2.5lt engine not a 4.2 so I am wondering if they are driven a bit too hard.

I am aware of the oil in the harness issue and that should not be caused by any of the above as well as the oil pump bolt issue.

    Overheating will also cause problems.

I will be shot down in flames for my comments by some but this is what forum is all about, gaining and sharing knowledge.

yes its me (who brings them in)

yes you could make one fit into a Td5 defender but it would take a lot more work than fitting into a tdi fender
extra (harder) things casue of the fact it's a Td5 donor truck
no accelertor cable ? fit Tdi pedal and cable
    engine mounts change to tdi
    change bellhousing to tdi
strip out loads of wiring & ECU and rewire every thing that works off ECU to make stand alone (probably loose a few electronic functions??)
change radiator & intercooler to tdi
and I'm sure 50 other things I'm not thinking of ATM

I honestly think you'd be better getting a Tdi fender and starting from that,
I've got one in my 130 if your over in Vic and want a drive

    Jase
