    Td5 turbo problems

Hi guy's, a friend of mine with a Td5 has had a problem. We were on the sand loaded up and it very suddenly got very hot, coolant spilt from tank, the coolant was green(problem?). After we got off the beach we also noticed that the turbo has cracked on the exhaust side around one of the bolt's that hold it together. Performance is still good and they drove home from Port Macquarie to Newcastle without further problems.
    It's a 1999 TD5 disco auto, completley standard.
Any thoughts on what to do with the turbo? , coolant?.

    G'day john

Coolant sounds fine bein green as that is the normal colour of glycol coolant..

As for it suddenly overheating id be susin the cooling system and get it pressure tested and have the rad man put his sniffer in the rad to check for combustion gasses to see if the head gasket is leaking ...

Do you know if the head dowls have been replaced as im sure the std jobbies are plastic and have ill effect on the head gasket seal ...

As for the cracked exhaust maniold/turbine housing that has probably happened with the heat from it cooking and spewing all the green coolant ...

Id be verry sus of this eng now and would have the rite people look at it as this could be the start of a major problem if not sorted quick well worth a drive to dungog or else were with knowlage of the td5

    cheers

TD5 engines are supposed to have OAT coolant, not green glycol.

I can't comment on the turbo crack but as Chris says, it's possibly due to the coolant quenching it.

No expert here but from memory if OAT and glycol coolants are mixed together it will make the radiator rust away.

Same think that happened to george 130 isn't it?

not sure on the differance either but its the same in our cummins engines.

    only allowed the red stuff??

it is possible to get the crack welded up, but! it wont be easy and the ongoing problems could cause a pain in the bum..

as for how the crack got there?? sounds like something might have been loose? this could have caused the overheating? and or the crack?? exhaust gasses escaping at the manifold, making the ecu feed in more fuel???

    cheers phil

Mixing them or using the Glycole will kill you cooling system. It will cause electrolosis with the aluminium and once the head goes the combustion gasses will speed the process up even faster. I would suspect the turbo cracked due to sudden temp change and may be weldable but probably better to replace it, Try talking to a few mechanics on that one. With the coolant if it's not OAT get it out ASAP and flush the system till you are certain and then flush it even more, This is a must. After that test its performance with just water and if things are OK fill it with the OAT.

    PS
I took 12 months to find the real cause of all my woes.

Some OAT coolant is green but most are pink. You must have OAT or you will pay the price I did.
