CEM additive

Hi all,
Just thought I'd bring this thread back to life and ask the same question as I'm interested in some more opinions from people that have used CEM.

Basically my thought is to use the "Flushing Oil Concentrate" on my 97 Disco TDi that had done 90,000km's when I bought it. It's actually the oldest mileage diesel I've ever purchased which does give me some mild concern to get it right and keep it that way.

On their website it says "30 mins of fast idle", can't I simply drive in first gear round the block for 30 mins? :D

Once the flush is done I'll go back to my religion of Penrite oil/filter every 5000km's, which I'm sure will open up another can of worms :eek:

used cem on my disco 155000km (first service since i bought it)
had the cem left over from the hilux i wrote off recently

worked wonders on both engines, the tdi didnt have anywhere near as much gunk as the rollux, as expected

there are 2 advised doses of the flushing oil concentrate
1. dirty engine - fast idle 30 mins
2. routine maintenance - drive normally 30 mins
dont ask me what difference it makes, you also use less concentrate for routine maintenance.
as with the rollux ill be doing the dirty engine routine till the oil comes out a little cleaner

IMHO I don't think I'll do the maintenance dosing as I have heard the TDi engine doesn't soot up the oil as much as most Japanese diesels. Also from my own experience having owned a Isuzu truck, V8 County and a Rangie that all did over 300,000km's with oil/filter every 5000km's and all ran as smooth/good as the day I bought them (all purchased with less than 40,000km's on the clock).

But I do like the initial flush idea and the more old threads I dig up on it, the more it seems to be a positive thing.

the maintenance dosing is really only needed if you rarely run the vehicle loaded, i find a drive with the camper trailer after a few weeks of unloaded driving soon gets the motor behaving nicely again...

A friend of mine with a same model Disco, recently towed his bosses Disco TD5 100km's back in to town. He commented on both how well it actually towed the TD5 and also how much better it felt to drive after the fact.

So I think you bring up a good and valid point.

It will be interesting to see how it goes on my Disco as the 90,000km's from what the previous owner has said was all stop/start city driving. Although you would have thought the drive back here would have prolly done it a world of good (1400km's there abouts).

Although I am happy with the way it runs/pulls, I actually find it quite a drivable engine, in fact off road I find the TDi has far better engine braking than the V8.

Currently the only things that bug me about it is the diesel puff on start up (may look fine on a Defender or Isuzu truck, but ugly for a pretty Disco :p ), rocker cover leaks, sump leaks and there is a niggly tappet noise which I suspect to be worn valve stem covers (clearance pads, whatever you want to call them).

Everything else that needs doing is purely maintenance.

Nothing you can do about that. It is designed in (extra fuel for easier starting).

:unsure: My knowledge of diesels is lacking especially as my Td5 is my first. I have been driving very gently so far with mainly city driving. I'm averaging about 11.5ltrs/100km. I don't think she's gone over 3000rpm in normal day to day driving and can confidently say I could not drive her any smoother. :unsure:

Am I taking it too easy. Does it need to rev more. I'm interested that comments appear to be that when loaded, it revels in it.

Any hints on how the Td5 should be driven or if in fact I should try CEM or the Pro-Ma stuff to flush her out. Thanks for any advice.

not revs, load....

big difference....

just doing high revs doesnt raise the combustion temperature, pulling a load does and that is what burns the glaze off as i understand it, or you use a chemical to do it eg. CEM or similar.

Right-ee-o then...nothing to tow so might try the additive. Didn't mean to hijack the thread with economy questions - will try archives. :wasntme:
