Thread: LT95 rear output shaft play

    LT95 rear output shaft play

    Gday all as the title says I have a bit of play in the rear output shaft, I can feel it at the handbrake drum and at the front of the rear drive shaft. Do I just need to tighten the big nut behind the drive shaft universal? I reshimmed the intermediate shaft when changing high range gears only 4 months ago and dont remember having any play then.
    Another quick question, one front hub has started leaking through the rubber boot after I pulled the swivel pin to check for wear, all I did was remove brake caliper and pull the pin out why would this be leaking now? Any ideas would be appreciated, axle breather has been checked and is clear.

    Damn, seem to be creating more problems than I am solving at the moment.

    Play on the output shaft has to be either wear on the bearings or, perhaps more likely, the yoke loose on the shaft, which means tightening the big nut as you say.

    When you say leakage from the boot do you mean the seal on the ball? When you pulled the swivel pin, while it was out, there was nothing to hold the seal onto the ball, and it may have got some dirt behind it, damaging the seal. Or it may just be coincidence.

    Thanks John will try tightening the big nut today hope that works. The leak is from the knock on rubber boot on the hub drips of oil spray over the outside of the rim and tyre, its not the oil seal that wipes the swivel ball clean when you turn the steering wheel.

    These are called hub caps or dust caps. They have to be regarded as a consumable item, as they do not stand up to the Australian sun. Average life seems to be about five years, by then they lose their elasticity and stop sealing or even crack. Cost is about $5 from any of the usual suppliers.

    You can get a bit more life out of them (if not cracked) by prying them off, degreasing and applying a bead of silicone gasket sealer to the groove before reassembling.

    the nut that holds the yoke on I think is the same as the Series one 1" and on the Series needs to be tightened to 80+ Ft/Lbs, on the Series the first indication that it's loose is a wavering Speedo needle,as the nut holds the pressure on the speedo worm gear

    Thanks for all the replies. I took the rear tailshaft out today and checked the big nut and it was done up FT, I tested it with my torque wrench on 200nm and it didnt budge. Am i right in thinking it must be that bearing in the output housing behind the handbrake? I have a spare gearbox would it be worth swapping the housings the spare doesnt seem to have any play in it (though not sure).
    The hubcaps are all new the first thing I did was put a couple of new ones on to see if that helped. I took one off that isnt leaking and there was no oil in it seems to be a dustcap more than an oil seal. Why would I be getting oil coming out the end of the axle? Checked diff and swivel housings oil levels (to make sure not too high) and they were all ok but removed a small amount of oil anyway to see if it helps.

    Without looking at the book, I think it can be either that bearing or the other one on the shaft - but if one is worn you can assume they all are. The speedo drive housing (again without looking at the book, which is in the shed, and its dark) retains the bearing, not supports it, and has shims which you may be able to remove the play by adjusting (maybe I'm thinking of the series box, but I think they are similar in this respect).

    There is nothing to stop oil getting along the splines into the hubcaps in this model - in fact it stops the splines from wearing. They are supposed to keep oil in as well as dust out. Some of the non-genuine hubcaps I have had do not seal very well - a bit of silicone helps. It is usually the left ones that leak oil, but this depends on the slope of your usual parking spot!

    If you do buy new hubcaps, simmer them in your old billy (or your missus's saucepan if she is'nt looking) This will help them on and give a really good seal.
    Mine lasted since 1985 till recently, they fractured when I checked the flanges for wear.

    Good idea! Never thought of doing that. As with many items I suspect the older ones are better made - for example, when the lenses on my blinker repeaters faded I replaced them with ones from an Austin 1800 that had been sitting derelict in the sun for thirty years - same moulding, but the 1960s plastic lasts much better than the 1980s plastic!
