Bar & Magnum winch or diff lock

I am considering purchasing a new toy for the disco and request some input from the forum.

What do you thing of the ARB Magnum winches? They have come down inprice however are they the same as the T Max or Iron Man which are about $400 cheaper? I cannot justify the Warn price.

To fit winch I also have to purchase a winch bar. at $1300 for a new arb one would any body know of a good second hand one?

Instead of the winch I can put front and rear air lockers which will probably get me in more of a pickly but will be more fun. Then I could save and by a hand winch.

Openions much appreciated. I would love to get the lot but should alocate the funds more like a grown up.

I had a winch on my last ute and my Disco has one as well. I also have had a rear air locker fitted to the Disco rear.

My advice would be that if you go by yourself to tricky places get a winch but if you go in a group get lockers.

    That is my experience anyway.

personally l would fit lockers and carry a tirfor hand winch for the in case situations the amount of times you actually require a winch is less than the number of times lockers can get you thru the situation

Probably depends on where you go as to whether lockers and hand winch or just the power winch would suffice. Hand winches suck for long pulls but fine for correctly lines or the like.

I would actually think that the best long term financial solution (if you want both in the end) is to buy lockers new and later buy a second hand Warne winch later. Might even pick up a 2nd hand winch bar.

    i agree with the others.

I put the winch on mine before lockers... if i could do it again, id forget the electric winch and go for the lockers and a hand winch.

Thanks. Originally I was going winch but as you have all said its rarely used. In 5 years of owning the Disco I have only need to be winched twice on out trip to Cape york and since then have not required one. But I go 4WD every 6 to 8 weeks and alway with some one else. Now I will have to decide to go one or both.

With the winch ARB had a deal if you got both the winch and the bar they gave you a set if IPF spot lights. At $399 they are a good saving.

I would and have gone the winch route, lockers will get you into deeper poo than you will be able to drive out of, a winch will always get you out.
I wouldnt buy a new bar and at $1600 for an airbag compatible couldnt justify the expense, i got my bar and warn M800 for $1000.

I was luck and bought mine with a winch and rear locker. My winch gets used a lot for non 4WD jobs and I love it. Look for a second hand winch and bar. If dosh can go far enough then add a rear locker as well.
